California’s AIDS Healthcare Foundation, an American gay health charity, plan to file a petition that could seen the production of bareback pornography banned in California. Pinknews.co.uk reports that the group are pushing to amend state law which would require all adult-film stars to use condoms.
Bareback, or condomless, porn has seen a resurgence in recent years, and has become a popular gay porn genre.
Michael Weinstein, President of AIDS Healthcare Foundation said: “Although workers in adult films should enjoy protections under [current regulations], the adult film industry has steadfastly refused to take any steps to protect its workers from diseases spread by blood-borne pathogens, resulting in thousands of employees becoming infected with sexually transmitted diseases.”
In August, the foundation filed 16 worker-safety complaints with the California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board, over the lack of condom use in adult films made in California. According to the Foundation’s petition, the Los Angeles Department of Public Health has doented “an epidemic of sexually transmitted diseases” among California’s porn stars.
Last year porn director Chi Chi La Rue made a public service announcement about barebacking in the porn industry.
“When I first started seeing barebacking titles appear, of course I was disappointed and very outspoken,” said La Rue. “The fact is that it was pretty obvious to most that the models ‘appeared’ to be HIV+ and were having unsafe sex with what ‘appeared’ to be other HIV+ models… What we are seeing now is drastically different. We are seeing movies with 18 year old twinks being gang banged without condoms. We are seeing…20 year olds in the UK who have reportedly become HIV+ after making their first porn.”
”…Some companies say that they test their models, which just gives a false sense of security. There is no way to 100% protect the health of models by testing only. What if the test was taken a day before the person’s HIV became detectable? What if the model caught HIV a day after he was tested?”
In a recent interview with Same Same, pornstar Steve Cruz talked about the importance of safe-sex.
“I spent most of my early 20s partying and having risky sex. It’s a miracle I survived my darker years,” said Cruz. “I’m very public about this. I try to use my experience to help others avoid the hard choices I made in my past. I lost very close friends to HIV. Most guys I know who are positive are living with HIV, thanks to the medications. It’s convenient to forget HIV is still a deadly virus. As a single guy, men were always pressuring me to bareback. It’s gotten so relaxed that I felt safer negotiating sex on a porn set where condoms are enforced than in my private life.”
