Instagram's new controversial privacy policy

We all knew this was coming (Facebook acquired it) but the new policy (which goes into effect on January 16th) its beyond ridiculous. A clear privacy violation! Quote from the new policy:

Instagram does not claim ownership of any Content that you post on or through the Service. Instead, you hereby grant to Instagram a non-exclusive, fully paid and royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable, worldwide license to use the Content that you post on or through the Service, except that you can control who can view certain of your Content and activities on the Service as described in the Service's Privacy Policy

It seems thats the price for a free service. If the product is free, then you are the product.

Update: Instagram's response. Two useful quotes:

It is not our intention to sell your photos

We do not have plans to do use your photos for advertising

You might not "plan" to do it, doesn’t mean you WON’T do it.

It is simply obscene.

We all expected FaceBook to do something to piss-off users, but I don't think anyone saw this overreach coming.

I really think we have to draw a line in the sand this time, and everyone needs to delete their instagram accounts. This kind of extortion can't be allowed to become the new norm! If we let them away with this without it destroying the company, what will come next?

This is a spot-on response. Bravo for getting right on top of the issues. However, I also agree with Georgie. The trust has been broken, and I think people that remain on Instagram will think twice before sharing.

Im sure they'll change their position due to the back lash but apparently these changes only take place January 16th so if you delete your account before then you won't be effected.

It's a shame it's not an opt in option like other libraries.

Also there was some debate that if an 17 yr old was to upload a nude shot would Instagram be responsible for selling child porn if they sold the image on.

There is no reason why people don't just ditch Instagram and use Flickr or another service instead.

It's a phone app that lets you take photos, ruin them with stupid hackneyed filters and then annoy your friends with them

Though to be fair some artistic people can do great things with the silly filters.

This Instagram policy is so ridiculous. To some, it may not matter but I don't think a lot of people really want their personal photos used in marketing and advertising for a company's sake. Yes, they are posting to a public domain, but there is something unsettling about a company taking your photos for THEIR use.

I don't think it is a wise choice on Instagram's move.
