@golfdelta21 Alaska is the most Northern, Southern, Eastern state of the US (if you exclude Hawaii).

Alaska’s extreme location affords its inhabitants a clear view across the Bering Strait which uniquely, albeit fuzzily, qualifies them to conduct critical negotiations with a foreign enemy power on top of all their other mundane survival skills such as baiting bear or moose and kippering salmon for smoking.

1 in 4 deaths in the EU are due to cancer

In 2015, 1.3 million people died from cancer in the European Union (EU), which equated to more than one quarter (25.4 %) of the total number of deaths.

Among the EU Member States, the share of the total number of deaths which were due to cancer in 2015 exceeded 30.0 % in the Netherlands and Slovenia. In contrast, less than one fifth of all deaths in Bulgaria and Romania were caused by cancer.

Quite a small number of that gets pampered with meals of acorn and allowed to roam in liberty and freedom for their allotted time on this good earth. Then their hind legs undergo apotheosis as jamon de bellota. Yum.

First female army chief in EU

LJUBLJANA - Slovenia appointed Major General Alenka Ermenc as chief of the army, the government said on Tuesday, making her the only woman in charge of a NATO country’s military.

Ermenc is the first woman Chief of the General Staff of the Slovenian army. She takes over from her predecessor Alan Geder on Wednesday.

Ermenc has served in the army since 1991, the year Slovenia declared independence from Yugoslavia. She studied at the Royal College of Defence Studies and King’s College University, both in London.

It seriously blows my mind that the ATLHawks actually wanted Trae Young instead of Luka. Not sure when they will understand that Euroleague is 2nd best league in the world. Luka was MVP of that league, Final 4 MVP also...

No more free plastic bags in Slovenian stores

Buyers in stores across Slovenia will no longer be able to get plastic bags free of charge as of today. However, free lightweight plastic bags will still be allowed at the fresh produce isle. The measure is a part of EU-wide efforts to halve the use of lightweight plastic bags to 90 per person annually by the end of 2019.

If I remember correctly, free plastic bags disappeared in Sweden in the mid 1970s, in the aftermath of the first Oil Crisis...

First we got rid of paper bags to avoid cutting down trees. Then we avoided butter and replaced it with execrable margarine. We went low fat by going all hog on carbohydrates. Why can't we find alternatives that are not worse than what we are replacing?

They always got brown paper bags in stores in American movies (presume they do so in real life too). Perhaps it's the same in Sweden?

In Africa you balance stuff on your head. People always think up good solutions.

Trees are easy to (re)grow. All you need are seeds. Rain and sunshine at no extra cost.

So, paper bags should be okay.

Of course if we all dispensed with supermarkets then we wouldn't have to drive to them and have everything wrapped up in endless packaging.

It never occurs to people to grow their own. Keep a few chickens. You can do all that even with a tiny garden. The people who are full time professional moaners about climate change probably have a few sets of plastic flowers and that's as close as they'll get to pulling the finger out and growing some food for themselves. Think about it, when is the last time you heard a major politician, leader, etc. imploring people to get off their arses and start productive gardening? Not tokenism. The real thing.

All people want are easy solutions. Save the world effortlessly? Zero personal sacrifice required? People who preach such promises are usually snakes.

Do you grow your own food?

Honestly, people are great are dreaming up new ideas that mean they can continue sitting on their fat back sides lol. Cute idea though.

Yes, in fact my family does. But my point is that it was not that long ago that sugar and flour came in cotton bags which were then repurposed by frugal housewives. Same with fish which were caught with natural fibre nets. You would not see a Sargasso Sea of banana and coconut fronds choking the oceans and wildlife pitifully getting caught in nylon driftnet.

The nature of the internet at work. An innocent contribution to an innocent conversation turned into a trolling inquisition. Nothing more to gain here, I think I shall get off first.
