Internet Censorship: the latest move...

See:
"NZ internet filter goes live - gov forgets to tell public"
http://anonym.to/?http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/03/12/new_zealand_internet_filter/

Two points:

(i) the government "forgot" to tell the public.

(ii) the huge list of banned sites will be kept secret.

Personally I think internet porn is getting out of hand. There is no need for 'rape porn', some of the BDSM stuff goes overboard, with blood etc. (just my opinion, but I guess 'consenting adults' rule applies) and of course kiddie porn is inexcusable (although it is difficult to say in cases where say one 17yr old sends a nude pic to her boyfriend... and then they both get arrested... common sense should apply). I know that the UK have already targeted, in a very general way, "extreme" porn, whatever that means (they don't really say). Ultimately what we look for are videos with guys in them that we have the hots for --I always enjoy porn more if I get the sense that the actors are enjoying themselves, but sadly you rarely get that impression.

It's also worrying that the 'list' is kept secret, and sites being added to it are not decided by elected officials, but by bureaucrats, behind closed doors...

When DVD's etc are banned, the list is always made public (at least in most countries). But the internet is different to just movies --there is more on the internet than just movies or pics --political sites, etc. So really they could put a site on the 'list' and we would never know!

In China, you can get shit loads of porn... but any site that questions the 'system' is on a 'list'.

I am sure there are endless arguments... but we should all agree that these are very worrying developments. At least the New Zealanders were eventually told the internet had been censored (which just goes to prove they could censor thousands of sites and the general public would not even notice!). I also believe that some religious sites dealing with abortion were put on the 'list' (maybe because they showed pics of aborted babies etc., and that was considered to be 'indecent'??). But then what if someone put up a site campaigning against a war (there might be pics of dead people, or deformed babies --the bio-weapons etc.) so 'they' would decide this site was 'indecent' and, again, it just goes on the secret 'list'.

Even this smiley :butslap: might be banned!

I don't think we have to much to worry about in the US.
How are they going to make it happen? Besides, first they will have to put together a committee to spend billions of dollars over the course of a several year study. Heck the "fools" can't even keep track of 100 guest at a state dinner, but suddenly they will be able to monitor millions of computers.
Nonsense I say!!!
Pure nonsense!!!!
We don't even know if we are coming or going!

Apart from what is actually illegal (snuff movies, kiddie-porn, accessibility of porn to children, etc) the wisest approach is perhaps self-censorship by reflecting on questions like: "What is this doing to me? Is it doing me or anyone else harm?" Most adults are capable of doing this without needing a big brother to tell us what we should and should not look at or read. And we learn through our own experience, often by making mistakes.

I do understand what you are saying. In the cases of individuals getting caught with stuff, around here, it's because they were trying to trade "kiddie porn" or and the Police got a tip to monitor an individual.
But in general. I don't see how the government can truly make it happen.
I can see where they can ban stuff, and in all honesty I would agree some should be banned. But I fail to see how they will stop or suppress it. ( I really can't think of the correct word I need here). I can see them stopping some instances, they find a certain site and shut it down. But coming up with a practical way of monitoring all traffic for banned material is way beyond our abilities. I think.
Maybe I'm not following you. Or not explaining myself very well.
What I guess I'm trying to say is: we can't get heath care figured out here.
We have VA hospitals to help all the veterans who served in the armed services. They should get the best of treatments and the best of care, and never be turned down or away. Yet if you actually come here and are a veteran and go the the VA, they SUCK!! It is deplorable how badly they are managed. So we can't get that right, how can we come up with a solution to censor the internet?
I can understand how China can, because they started when the internet became available etc., and have kept up. It's all "state run".
But not here, it's huge. There's no reining it under control now that it's grown so massive.

Have I pretty much lost everyone now?

;)Just do what I'm doing....indiscriminately downloading MEGA-TERRABYTES of free porn while it's out there for the FREE taking and someday when WORLDWIDE BigBrother clamps down - I'll have lots of "stuff" to go through and sort out when I have more time on my hands...

I'm with you on this Teg - these are the last days of the WILD WILD WEST* Internet (pm me if you don't get the reference) - There are more Marshalls coming into town everyday to enforce (or make) new internet "laws" Look on the positive side - you are living at a time when you could (theoretically) tell your kids what it was like when a site like GH was in its heyday!!;)

THOSE WERE THE DAYS!!!

peace!

Today 'freedom' is typically about men sitting on their own in little rooms wanking in front of some small screen, periodically yawning.

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

So true, so like garth i shall fill up while I can, already looking at a terabyte of data....no so much porn as old movies that i fear would be forgotten!

Re:

I have a dedicated 1.5 TB, specifically in preparation for this (and college, I can't leave that shit at home)

No they absolutely can censor whatever they want. Remember governments, corporations have oodles of money at there disposal and whole armies of drone-civil servants to do their bidding. But there won't be a big debate... they will just gradually change porn, change demand even, social attitudes... won't happen over night, but one day, when we are old, we will look at the generations that came after us, and at how much the world has changed since 'our day'.

Yea just take America, we don't have any money, we borrow from China or spawn it straight from thin air. We still have enough to still be in a war, and pass Obama-care. Our gov't will probably just start snuffing out what they don't like when nobody's looking. When people ask, they'll make something up to cover their tracks, and wait until the "new mold" forms around what they've created (or destroyed). Or worse, Internet "patriot acts," imposed for the so-called "greater good."

I have about 125gb... and I thought that was bad!

Crikey, 1000gb! It must be impossible to even know or remember what you have now.

;)

lol nah, i have a pretty good idea, but the bulk of it are games and programs over 5gb each...plus i just have a mantra that anything that was worth watching is worth keeping...

oh yeah - I download a BUTLOAD! (so to speak) but as I mentioned....COLLECT NOW - sort it out later when you'll have PLENTY of time when "THEY" finally crack down on the internet. Honestly - it's a GOLD MINE out there right now! As few as just a couple years ago I used to pay for porn - now you'd be STUPID to pay for anything you want because it's out there for free! (and i have a LOT of legal "interests")

Bottom line is this will ultimately change - one on my favorite boards other than GH has mysteriously disappeared over the last couple days. So it goes...i'm just preparing for Teggy's BLACK Police-State future - which I generally don't disagree IS coming - the beauty is ITS NOT HERE YET!;)

I stash things. Not just porn, but mainstream DVDs, video recordings, CDs, tapes, mp3s, etc while I can get them even if they're not watched or listened to for months/years for that moment when I can get around to them and they might not be available anymore. I've loads of stuff I'll probably never watch.

I can't honestly see the dark future you predict happening. I first used the net back in 1996 and that was the "Wild West" days - all open prairies , no built up areas, then the wagon trains of settlers gradually moved in :p Right now it is at its best yet, and governments always panic over such freedoms of information.

There was a terrible fuss by the music industry when the more convenient cassette tapes started becoming popular back in the 70s, and all things go round in circles, so heard and seen all this before.

The net is ultimately impossible to control, offshore servers in countries who don't care will always exist, software is constantly changing and for every encyption there will be an unencryption. Even in China I believe it's possible to get around their censorship if you have the knowhow.

I doubt very much porn will disappear, but if we stock up now we won't care anyway :p

Well u lost me somewhere in the hospital bit... but for the rest, many people are ONLY caught because of their own stupidity. They leave their PC in for repairs with illegal porn on it, pay for illegal porn by credit cards, or else go on chat rooms shouting things like "anybody here into kids?"
The Net is so HUGE few companies even bother to look at what people are doing, until they have to, by which time most of us would be well and truly caught. Can you remember what you surfed six years ago? Ten? What you "jokingly" said in a chatroom about the neighbours daughter? Because it all may still be out there on someone's drive, waiting for the wrong person to find it.
I was told way back in the 1990s when I first started surfing chat rooms, to think of the Net as a masked ball. You may think no-one knows you, but at midnight, when the masks come off... you'll be surprised.
I first logged onto this site two days ago using a secondary e-mail address, not my business address.
Today I got a pop-up showing my Friends Reunited account, on my main e-mail address, asking if I wanted to link. Even the server knows who I really am...
