"NZ internet filter goes live - gov forgets to tell public"

Two points:
(i) the government "forgot" to tell the public.
(ii) the huge list of banned sites will be kept secret.
Personally I think internet porn is getting out of hand. There is no need for 'rape porn', some of the BDSM stuff goes overboard, with blood etc. (just my opinion, but I guess 'consenting adults' rule applies) and of course kiddie porn is inexcusable (although it is difficult to say in cases where say one 17yr old sends a nude pic to her boyfriend... and then they both get arrested... common sense should apply). I know that the UK have already targeted, in a very general way, "extreme" porn, whatever that means (they don't really say). Ultimately what we look for are videos with guys in them that we have the hots for --I always enjoy porn more if I get the sense that the actors are enjoying themselves, but sadly you rarely get that impression.
It's also worrying that the 'list' is kept secret, and sites being added to it are not decided by elected officials, but by bureaucrats, behind closed doors...
When DVD's etc are banned, the list is always made public (at least in most countries). But the internet is different to just movies --there is more on the internet than just movies or pics --political sites, etc. So really they could put a site on the 'list' and we would never know!
In China, you can get shit loads of porn... but any site that questions the 'system' is on a 'list'.
I am sure there are endless arguments... but we should all agree that these are very worrying developments. At least the New Zealanders were eventually told the internet had been censored (which just goes to prove they could censor thousands of sites and the general public would not even notice!). I also believe that some religious sites dealing with abortion were put on the 'list' (maybe because they showed pics of aborted babies etc., and that was considered to be 'indecent'??). But then what if someone put up a site campaigning against a war (there might be pics of dead people, or deformed babies --the bio-weapons etc.) so 'they' would decide this site was 'indecent' and, again, it just goes on the secret 'list'.
Even this smiley :butslap: might be banned!
