I just finished reading Rowling's first adult book - A Casual Vacancy.

Most of the Potter fan-sites HATED it - probably because it was for adults

I'm wondering if anyone here read it, and what they made of it?

Oh god it was awful. I DO like Harry Potter, but the fact that this was an adult book didn't bother me in the slightest, I've read books with far harsher subject matter than this.

What annoyed me so much was that she was clearly trying so hard to make a book that wasn't for kids, that she seemed to forget to make it interesting. It's dull. Every other word is a swear word, and most of the book is written in parenthesis - one particular example had the parenthesis open on one page, and 3 pages later it finally closes.

I'm interested to see what she puts out next, to see if this was just an awful mistake/first attempt at adult writing, or if this actually is her style for future books. I'm hoping it was just a one off though, and whatever she puts out next will at least be interesting.
