The Fire is best described as a portal to Amazon's content. If you buy your books, music, and movies from Amazon, then it's a great little device.

It CAN do more, but that was not what it was built for, so it's unsurprising that as a regular tablet device it's lack-lustre at best. There is a reason it is cheap, and it's not because it's the best product out there!

If you want a good general purpose tablet then I'd suggest looking at the Galaxy Tabs from Samsung, and of course, the iPad. Now, there is an Apple event due on the 7th of March, so the chances are good that either there will be a price drop on the current models, or, that you will be able to get iPad 2s very cheap second hand as people upgrade to the tree.

Objectively, the best all-round package is still the iPad by a mile, but I know some people have religious objections to Apple, so if you automatically dismiss the iPad, then give the Samsung Galaxy a go.

I'd also suggest steering WELL clear of the Blackberry Playbook - amateur hour is the kindest thing you could say about it. It was, at best, half-baked. Maybe the next version will be descent, but the current version is embarrassingly poor.

I think you should consider buying something better than Kindle, which is mainly an ebook reader. Not the best choice for videos...

I have a Kindle Fire. All the things you have listed that you want to do are the things that it does best. Here's what I like:

  • It's a compact 7" tablet instead of the iPad sized 10". This is going to be a matter of personal preference - but I really like the carry-around-ability of the smaller sized tablets. I can put it in a coat pocket.
  • eReader - Very good - all my books are on Amazon, so I'm a prime candidate. Super easy to click - buy - download, in less than a minute you have your book. They also have a good selection of popular magazines now.
  • Movies - I like Amazon MUCH better for movies. Amazon gets new movies months ahead of Netflix. While their back catalog isn't as extensive as Netflix, they give me any movie that about 8 years old or older for FREE. (Because I'm an Amazon Prime member already.)
  • It does not feel "cheap". It's very well-built. Not to the slick chrome and glass standard of the iPad, but as good as anything else out there running Android.
  • Kindle browser plays YouTube and other web videos. Take THAT iPad!
  • You have access to the Amazon Android store. Any apps you may have bought for your Android phone from Amazon are yours to download and use on the K-Fire.
  • It's only $200!!!

Now here are the things you need to know about that they don't tell you in the ads:

  • As an eReader it's a bit heavy. Your arms will get tired holding this over your head in bed. This is the same problem the iPad has - but it's a bit more of a surprise in a smaller unit. Especially since the other Kindles weigh next-to-nothing.
  • The screen that is so lovely for watching movies and browsing the web, is less than ideal for reading books. Again, this is a fault all tablets share when compared to dedicated eReaders. That $79 Kindle looks spectacular because it uses e-ink for sharper letters and more contrast.
  • The Amazon app store doesn't have everything that's in Google's app store. Most of the main programs are there. But there are some frustrating omissions (SwiftKey). But also some surprising findings as well (Netflix).
  • The touch screen gets mixed reviews. When it works it's wonderful. But sometimes it has a tendency to lag. Some of the lags are so long you start to wonder if the device is frozen. (But it always comes back, so far anyway.)
  • The K-Fire only has 6 GB of space to hold your music, apps, games, movies, work documents, and anything else you might want to put on there.
  • It is a wi-fi only device. So you can read your books anywhere, but you have to be near a hot spot to browse the web or use the cloud.

For me, already an avid Amazon buyer and reader - it's a steal. There is nothing else with this quality for $200. However there are other nice Tablets out there. The iPad2 should get knocked down a peg when the iPad 3 is announced next week. That could be a decent buy on eBay.

The new Samsung 7.7 is a dream come true. The battery life! The gorgeous screen! It's so thin and light! And...... it costs $500 - the subsidized price - from Verizon. If you were to buy it outright it would be about $800.

You see, it's when I look at that, and then look at my perfectly usable carry everywhere K-Fire that only cost $200 - I know I made the right choice. For now.
