I tend to be a bit protective of my place and have come to the realization that I need to start branching out and inviting people into my life if I expect them to really care for me. So in a bold gesture, I invited a guy who is interested in me over for diner tomorrow. I know he likes blackened fish, so I am making him blackened tuna steak, roasted brussels sprouts with balsamic vinegar and prob a salad. I was going to get a white wine to go with fish but he likes scotch, I'm still debating that part. Either way I hope it all goes well and we move forward in our relationship and continue to get closer.

What do you all like to make for your significant other?

I can cook, and do cook, but mostly basic foods. I usually just take people into restaurant:p It's saves from mess and isn't really all that more expensive than cooking fancier food myself.

But I do love it when some one cooks the fine dinner, so thumbs up for you;)

I love to cook, but love it when someone else cooks for me - it is all the time and extra effort that I appreciate. Your menu sounds great, except I would be careful about serving cruciferous vegetables (i.e. brussel sprouts) - they tend to cause a lot of gas. So depending on how long your date is going to last, I might suggest a lower fiber vegetable like peas or carrots.

But kudos to you for making the effort - hope it goes well!

I love to cook for friends - and especially for a special friend - nothing beats a good homemade dinner with fancy wine - and the bedroom is so much nearer than driving (my place -your place ? ) home from a restaurant...

good luck and just let us know how it went ;)

Hello havocs!

If the guy you're seeing is as fishy as myself (yeah, very bad joke...excuse me...) you'll definitely have him on the hook! Your menue sounds delicious!

But there's one thing you'll have to teach him: having SCOTCH with a fine fish (or with any dinner) is just barbaric...yukk...awful...

I have to agree here - having scotch WITH fish ( or WITH chicken, beef, pork whatever) is a no-no for me.... IMHO wines with food - spirits after

Just to avoid any missunderstanding: vodka, gin or cognac with the fish is just as awful as scotch...any kind of spirits is awful...

When I was a very young man, I did a lot of "spirits instead of" but now, having become diabetic it's mineral water for me...

Firstly - best of luck with your dinner date!

Secondly - Tuna is much closer to a meat than a traditional fish, and sprouts are a very earthy vegetable, so, I would suggest a light red wine like a Pinot Noir rather than a white.

As for your actual question - if I want to please my darling beloved I do him pan-fried lamb steaks with rosemary and thyme service with rosemary and thyme roast potatoes, and roasted Zuchini, red onions and garlic sprinkled with balsamic vinegar (after roasting so you get sweet from the roasted onions and garlic, and sour from the basamic).

I usually don't cook for anyone (My sister does that) in fact, I think the last time I cooked for someone was because I made too much and shared it xD

Thanks everyone,
I'll also make some brown jasmine rice and offer that as someone mentioned I was missing a grain.

Thanks for this tip, I'll have to see if I have a light red or have time to go and get one.

date over, went well; the seasoning i used on tuna was good; basically a cajun seasoning; but i over cooked it and it was dry but we managed; i think i used too much balsamic vinegar in the brussels sprouts but it turns out he loves brussels sprouts so he gobbled them up. Fun time!

sounds great, I think making your beloved a fabulous meal they love is truly one of the greatest joys we have. I have been making lots of Italian dishes lately as the black Russian tomatoes in our garden are producing like crazy. gb2000ie or anyone else do you have any tips for making homemade Lasagna better and what European wine would be best.

Lasagna is not really my thing, so I can't give any specific tips. What I will say is that when it comes to mediteranean food, one of the heavenly combinations at the heart of so many dishes is Tomatoes with Basil, and if your recipe calls for those two together, it really pays dividends to use fresh Basil if you can. If nothing else, it will make your kitchen smell fanastic, and get everyone's apetite stimulated!

As for wine with a heavy dish like Lasagne, I'd go for a deep red, a nice Chainti from Italy, or a Rijoca from Spain. Another option would be a Tempranilo, they go so well with beef dishes.
