Yes, I know that. There are a lot things in the modern and older church that are rather ugly but what does this have to do with the Person of Josef Ratzinger? How was he personally involved in that?

Oh and yes, many states have things in their past that they don't like or should not like. Not just the Vatican. May everybody ask, how well their homeland has dealt with that. Maybe if Italy had made a good example of a process of coming to terms with one's past, the Vatican would have followed.

But there is enough to talk about today's Ratzinger.

I'm aware of the church's disgraceful conduct during WWII, but, at that time Ratzinger was a teenager. I don't see how the church doing bad things before he had any power within it has anything to do with him. I don't see how the church's past makes it OK to wrongly call Ratzinger a Nazi. That is a big word to throw around.

As an ex-catholic myself I agree that it's all a pile of dangerous power politics in pretty frocks, but, it affects all of us, whether we like it or not. The pope has real power and influence, so whether we like it or not, he is important, and so is who replaces him.
