ihno, take stock of the situation:

I pay for the restoration.

you, go visit and pay the ticket.

The sum of the ticket collects the Vatican. Why is it so happens.

So tell me. I should worry about the heritage because others can enjoy?

There are many buildings of the Vatican that have been restored at the expense of the Italian state (ie taxpayers), including many churches, where you pay to enter the input. That sum is not intended to Italian state.

To understand certain mechanisms, you should live in Italy. It's nice to have nice things, but to pay for others is less beautiful.

I know but that's not the point. I don't think that's a valid argument to complain about tax money that goes to the "frescos".

The point is that cultural heritage is a responsibility of everyone. A responsibility before history and future generations.

Yes, these things cost a lot of money. And "the church" or anybody else who owns artworks etc. aren't allowed to do with the frescos etc. what they want, they get preservation orders and have to take care for the wellbeing of the piece. And those things cost. So it's only fair if they get supported by tax money.

Or does anyone think that the UNESCO should not care for The Last Supper of DaVinci, only because it's inside a monestary? And if that monestary cannot afford restaurations you would just shrug your shoulders and call it Bad luck and be happy that "the church" didn't get any money?

@Sal: I hardly doubt that the sum of entrance fee of The last Supper or Monte Cassino goes to the Vatican. I cannot recall having paid entrance fees for the Cathedrals of Milano, Genova or Rome. And you don't have to live in Italy to understand the concept, in other countries it's not much different. In England they wanted 8 € entrance fee for the Westminster Abbey, which I found was too much. And there are always people who think it's better to let the autographs of Beethoven's symphonies rotten rather than paying money for their restauration but that's just shortsighted.

The Cologne Cathedral alone costs 10.000.000 € per year and there is no entrance fee. There is an association with 14.000 members who pay for the Cathedral, the rest is paid by the church and the state.

You should be happy to live in a country with lots of history. Maybe you would like a solution like with the Buddhas of Bamiyan? Just destroy the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Sistine Chapel and the italian tax payer will never have to pay for it again. Of course you will loose half of the tourists but it's not that tourism is an important economical factor in Italy, right? :p

Like gb2000ie said before: There are more substantial things to criticise than the old buidings an their costs.

Because of the crisis in recent times have been cut significant funds for culture, museums and many other things. The ruins of Pompeii are falling to pieces, the Colosseum is following the same fate, and I could go on, but the list is long.

At The Church was not taken a single penny, no privilege has been touched. Instead, they have granted other relief (such as the exemption IMU for commercial activities belonging to the Church, and I assure you that there are many), they doubled the number, already high, professors of religion (Catholic, of course, in spite of the Secular State) , they took off funds to public schools to fund private Catholic schools, etc..

So you see, the problem is not the maintenance of an end in itself. Without this river of money intended for the "Holy See", I repeat, Italian taxpayers' money, there would be more than enough money to fix and restore the historical and artistic capital of the country, including those of a religious nature.

Maybe I can not explain. I care about the works of art and historical evidence of my country, but to defend the lobby of the Vatican, is falling apart all the rest.

Ihno you live in a country morally healthy, at least compared to mine. Why do not you suggest to German Government to take charge of the Church of Rome. German citizens would be willing to offer this sacrifice?

Candidates for pope are pretty wide open. You don't need to be a bishop. You don't need to be a priest.
They need something different. How about a lovely Czech boy, with great common sense and wonderful blue eyes.

I give you....Pope Sinner the First!

If Sinner is becoming Pope I'm re-registering to become Christian again :))

Yes, technically every catholic "believer" can become Pope. The Czech have changed the world of gay porn, why not change the catholic church? And maybe, if Sinner is too busy for this job, what about Karel Gott? :D

Karel Gott may have suitable name for it :D But I would take it. I have only one reuirement: won't wear these ugly red shoes after Benedict. Rather something like this:

They looks fantastic. Especially this iron toe-cap ...

... would be great for promoting reform!:rofl::D

Btw, is his name really "Karel Gott" in czech too? He had quite a career in Germany too (as I guess you know). Recently I saw a higgins model - big and bulked - who said he likes Karel Gott. :D

The red shoes btw. can be traced back to the roman emperors. That red was very rare 2000 years ago, from the purple snail.

I don't mind the red shoes, I find the skirts of the Cardinals far worse... :D

Yes, even it's not his stage name (what lot of people think). It's his real name what he has from day of his birth.

I guess skirts are practical. What you think they do "behind curtain"? Discussion on topic: "How many angels can be placed on the tip of a needle?" I don't think so...

This whole "Holier Than Thou" running around in Red or Black dresses lot just make me sick! The Pope resigns with a bullshit story that it is due to ill-health. The next thing a British Cardinal, who is a major gay basher and outspoken critic of homosexuals, resigns because he has had or is having a homosexual relationship! How many more have had a bit of nookie, both gay and straight and maybe even bi while hiding behind the Church?

When are these religious fanatics, be the Christians, Jews or Muslims going to realize that homosexuality is here to stay and to live and let live? I don't want to offend anyone but I am convinced that religion is the root of all evil and these events coupled with the millions killed in its name or just because they were different seems to prove my point!

Regarding the Catholic Church, I don't think that we have even touched the tip of the iceberg with gay priests but what is disgusting is the abuse these "men of God" have committed against children! If you want to play then play with your own size! Forcing sex on anyone, especially a child, is rape and rapists should go to jail for the rest of their lives. Rape is murder but the victim lives!

Sinner would have to change his name though. The name has to be someone from the bible, don't know if it has to be the name of a holy or not.

Even Karel Gott would have to change his name. ;)

Do you think a majority of the Vatican heirarchy is gay and that is why they have hidden the sexual adventures of the priests for years? Taken care of their own so to speak?

No they are there because Jesus said that the leaders of his church had to provide armed guards (Swiss) :?, piling up capital and property :?, Guarding a bank (IOR) :?, with which to speculate and make shady deals and dirty money laundering with dictators and bosses the underworld  ..... (I'd better stop here)

..... and they (la Chiesa di Roma) strictly follow all the precepts of Jesus Christ.

The fact that most of the clergy is gay is irrelevant.

The serious thing is that sexual practices have made them with the kids, and worst of all, they covered and concealed these crimes as if nothing had happened.
