Cute but deeply conservative concerning gays, condoms etc. There might not be much progress concerning those topics.

He's cute though. ;)

His rep is as a simple, holy man. Even if he does not move much in doctrine, it would be great if he could sweep out the stables of corruption.

I wish you the best, Francesco. The church really needs you.

well, there were worse potentional candidates, but lot of matters still remain to be seen. I don't believe He would start to respect gay people. It would be a miracle and I do not believe mireacles happen.

The contrast in his body language compared to Benedict is dramatic - he looks like a genuinely humble and honest man. Asking the crowd to pray for him before he gave the blessing is either the work of a PR genius, or a very promising sign of things to come.

He's a 76 year old cardinal, so I don't expect much from him on gay rights, but, as evidenced by his choice of name, he seems to be serious about fighting poverty, and that's a very good thing IMO. He's also not been one of those career bishops who just hang around the Vatican, instead he's been actually running a real diocese and remained in contact with real people. That also can't be a bad thing.

Finally - as the first ever Jesuit pope, I think he just might have a different take on the job to the last few we've seen.

For now, I'm pleasantly surprised!

B.

gb2000ie... I couldn't even say better everything you said... We'll see what would change... Wel next World Youth Day will be in Rio de Janeiro, so for sure he will be close to home in that time.
He is in almost same age like Benedict XVI but he looks much better in my opinion, much younger and healthier ! I loved his prenounciation too :)

Don't lose heart, Sinner. You have many elections to go. I still see Pope Sinner in your future.
You just need some seasoning. A few decades on your knees....to pray, of course.

New Pope. Same church? I think Curia Romana will go the traditional way (money laundering, pedophilia & corruption scandals). Nothing new in the West!

A lot of work to do for the PR-department of the Vatican. The new pope was about forty years old when the military dictatorship in Argentine started.

I hope the criticism concerning that will be more substantial than the self-righteous outrage that Ratzinger was member of the Hitler-youth as a boy and teenager.

If I recall correctly with the exception of some fortunate states in Western Europe and North Amercia almost every state in the world has faced dictatorship in the last century and if I may add - those fortunate states, esp. the USA, Great-Britain and France installed or supported those dictatorships in the first place as long as they suited their policy.

The USA is in fact the head of brutality all across the world. The US decision to receive Yemen's outgoing ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh shows Washington's continued support for brutal dictators.

The report, “Freedom in the World 2013,” gave seven nations the lowest possible rankings for both political rights and civil liberties. Of these seven– North Korea, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Sudan, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea and Saudi Arabia, the United States provides significant economic, military and/or diplomatic support to the governments of four of them.:(

This Pope has shown signs of humility, no golden cross. This morning (italian clock) he had black shoes.

I don't think about his past has supported the dictatorship. This morning he said he had many priests defrocked because they supported the dictatorship.

Now we need to think about his past, but I do not think it's true what they say about his past.

His Pope's name is a sign of break with Church past. FRANCESCO (Francis) a NEW name for a Pope. Like St Francis di Assisi , the Saint of poor, or St. Francis Xavier, the Jesuit.

How would this ''old'' Pope "clean out his troubled church"?

And more to the point, why would he? He is one of them (!?), the figurehead of the biggest maffia organisation in the world. The Vatican is all about power and money, religion is simply a tool. :?

All the shameful things of the past will only grow more in the future. :(

I do not see how even the humblest and nicest person can change the position of RCC on issues of homosexuality, the use of condoms, equality of women, abortion to name but a few.
Also, the new Pope's record on these issues does not make me hold my breath.
However, he is believed to be very passionate about economic inequality and poverty - also in the "developed" countries. A tough challenge if he really will try to do something about it.

The way is very simple, look at everyday life, trying to open the heart and mind to the arguments of others, especially listening without preconceptions.

But this is impossible to implement in a corporation like the Catholic Church.
