"Everyday people are straying away from the church and going back to God" - Lenny Bruce
Believing in somenthing is healthy, but what that somenthing is, that's up to you. If I believe in somenthing I don't think I need rules and restrictions from some group that says it knows better than me how I should believe.

This Pope has shown signs of humility, no golden cross. This morning (italian clock) he had black shoes.

I don't think about his past has supported the dictatorship. This morning he said he had many priests defrocked because they supported the dictatorship.

Now we need to think about his past, but I do not think it's true what they say about his past.

His Pope's name is a sign of break with Church past. FRANCESCO (Francis) a NEW name for a Pope. Like St Francis di Assisi , the Saint of poor, or St. Francis Xavier, the Jesuit.

So you say it's hopeful, well, maybe, but all these things you wrote here are just gestures, nothing less, nothing more. I'm interested about real actions. As I said I do not await miracles. (Also there aren't things what he could do for me, due to the fact that I live in nonreligious eniviroment and quite liberal country.) But if he would stop criminalizing and chasing gays in Africa and accept that condoms are just normal thing for health pratection same as safe belt in car. It would be really great.

I hope this my statement is humble enought and not servile as well.

No really guys in what kind of fantasy world are you living in? This is a pope for Christ's Sake, he's the Representative of the most sexist, idiocratic, dogmatic religion in the world. Even if he would come out saying "I love and respect every children of the world" that doesn't include criminal, women and gays. Wake up and smell the roses... this is a show... a very expensive show. Yes he does look like humble but is he humble enough to come and face an atheist and agree to some statements. He can't, as he represents the faith of the Roman Catholic Church, the very same faith that keeps on bashing gays, ridicule women, etc. His hat only could feed thousand of starving children... Congrat Francisco 1st but to me you're just a new actor from a lifelike Vaudeville Theater.

Maybe they can at least get him an attractive vehicle. That Pope-mobile is as foolish as those fish hats they were. Other than that, he is a figurehead of corruption but he should at least he should have a car that I don't have to laugh about.

I believe one of the commandments is "Thou shalt not put false gods before me". I really doubt the Almighty would embrace this church givens the behavior. Maybe he can make some change but my doubt consumes me.

Religous posts can always stir up strong passionate feelings in people.

I think we should try to stay civil in thread please.

The Pope used to ride in an open convertible (usually a Mercedes Benz) but then someone shot John Paul II.

So now , much like the President, he travels in a heavily armored monstrosity...

It seems to me many religious people are more concerned with belief rather than how people act. So if I believe the right thing, I have permission to treat large groups of people with anything but respect...and love.

Believing in something is healthy, but what that something is, that's up to you.

That depends on what you call 'healthy', and how much it relates to the rest of your life and how you treat other people. And the last part of the statement, the more one repeats it, the sillier it sounds. This is one reason why there's such a vast number of sects and breakaway groups in both the US & UK even inside christianity, let alone other religions.

You'd almost think that the true god - if he/she exists, - would have put mankind right over the millennia. For some reason that hasn't happened yet.

Ah, what we don't know.

There's probably more significant information in the recent confirmation of the Higgs Boson particle, along with the experiments that show amino acids form naturally under conditions of deep cold and deadly radiation. -God works in mysterious ways.

If only we knew the inner goings of the Church. What goes in behind Papal walls and in the cloisters of Bishops, Cardinals and Priests. It is certainly a challenge for them. On one side, the "word" is elastic enough to guide the faithful. But the Church is built on archaic value systems. Social constructs are built within the limiting construct of humans in the moment. "Guesses based on what each set of time and change is touching..." to quote a song.

If they were humble in their hearts, they would realize all that they don't know. And respect the lurching change that comes with time and circumstance. Given the Pope was a right wing lunatic over Gay Marriage in his native country, it will be interesting to see if his defeat there has taught him anything about the natural course of social evolution. If the answer is "No." we may be better off looking to U.S. and International efforts to study Mars.

Cute? There's nothing cute about bigotry. I'm not going to expect the Catholic church to bless gay marriages, but to liken the adoption of kids by gay parents to child abuse? Kids that might otherwise have no stable home or parental figures? Kids that might otherwise languish for years in a system that shuffles them around like used dolls? Finally giving them a home and a family is tantamount to child abuse now?

And speaking of child abuse: I would be very careful about throwing stones if I lived in a glass house.

By believeing in somenthing I meant that believing in 'somenthing' in life is healthy. That you don't just think all the time like "there's no point in life, it's just a moment between too emptines, I don't believe there is love existing in there etc." So belive in somenthing in your life. It has been studied (and think its quite obvious too) that is good that you have at least somenthing in life. To some that's their fate, to some its love or they believe in their art or other crap. And ofcourse fanatiscm and trying to change others or disturb others way of life makes it unhealthy.

Actually more concerned with appearances than practice. What good is your piety if your poor neighbour does not benefit from your kind regard.

I gave up my Catholicism long ago, so this pope isn't my pope. For me this has been about an interesting event, and a reason to have fun and be snarky.

If you want the take of a gay catholic intellectual (yes, they exist), Andrew Sullivan is the guy. His criticism of Benedict was withering. He seems to have real hope for Francis. He might be right.

Just visited web page of some Czech conservative cocks and seen first heading:
"Why Pope Fracisco won't destroy the Church? Because Holy Spirit will save it!"
Nothing is more funny than seeing how one bigot swears at other bigot.

He clearly has a good speech writer. Sorry I'm actually catholic and all but until he changes something for the better I'll put him in the 'could do better' pile.

I can understand, why you write what you write but if you can choose between

a cute backwardy gayhating Pope and
an ugly backwardy gayhating Pope

wouldn't you choose the cute one too?. ;) :D

Well if this going to be purely a beauty pageant I would choose the last pope. I think he had more charisma or more like that nasty look suggesting all sorta wicked stuff:p This new dude looks a bit "simple", but I'm only judging by that one photo.
