People of my generation (I'm 35) you all know that song, (and others) it is not about drugs so stop that shit  . What song marked your soul when you where young that define today who you are.

Yes mine is Puff the magic dragon, I sang it to my children when they were young to put them to sleep, (yes I'm that kind of daddy), my mom used to sing among many other songs but the one that stayed is my dragon from Onallee. Today my giant strings have made place for other things (Alex's penis is one of those) but beside that.

From Alex :)

Seeing this new thread Jake posted I push him off the computer because I wanted to write something on this one. Jake sang that song when we were flying to Australia 5 years ago, when we went to meet my parents, I was dying with worries and Jake just sang this song to calm me down because I was going to confront my mom and dad for me being gay. First you all should know that this dude is a fucking singer... he can sing Miserere Venere without a wrong note from Emma Shapplin (one of his favorite opera singer) he never cease to impress me. That's a really good question Jacky Paper... I love you so fucking much.

Alex

Oh yes, I remember that one, I really liked it when I was a child. Other songs that I can think of are in Finnish, so there may not be so familiar ones. One of my favorites was about a little trouble-making witch who made the children behave badly :p

...and now Puff is playing in my head all the time :p

Flintstones, Meet the Flintstones....
hahahahaha.
And many more stupid TV cartoon songs.
But those songs really lead to another thread from long ago about
TV programs we watched as kids.

How many remember...
Shave and a hair cut 2 bits.

Flintstones. Meet the Flintstones.
They're the modern stone age family.
From the town of Bedrock,
They're a page right out of history.

Let's ride with the family down the street.
Through the courtesy of Fred's two feet.

When you're with the Flintstones
you'll have a yabba dabba doo time.
A dabba doo time.
You'll have a gay old time.
:)):)):))

Peter, Paul and Mary never really knew just how popular and viral that song would turn out to be when they recorded it back in 1963. The author (Peter Yarrow) wrote the song as adapted from a poem penned by a college buddy of his, and the story is the timeless one of a young boy growing up and leaving childhood fantasies behind. Yeah, the urban myth about Puff having drug references is just a myth. It sounds cool but has no basis in reality.

Funny enough as a kid and listening to the lyrics I understood right from the start it wasn't about drugs... and god knows I did the nasty with drugs as a teenager... today I wouldn't even smoke a single spliff. There was a cartoon made of it and this came to confirmed that it wasn't about drug at all... but yeah call somebody Puff and there you have it hahahaha

You couldn't say it better about being Viral, when I sang it to Alex in the plane, people just budge in and started singing with us... we were 45 people in the plane singing the same song and obviously this lead to other childhood song... this 24 hours trip was all song and memories from old time. I was raised in a very musical home, both of my sister play piano (so do I) but I play saxophone and all other wind instruments. My dad was a opera singer (amateur but he as nothing to envy to Placido Domingo) my mom was a tune master (she would sing all those song from French crooners) in short I sing a variety of French, Spanish, English, Italian and Haitian song.

Facinating. What's your alltime fav aria? Mine would be a toss up between Largo Al Factotum from Rossini's Barber of Seville and just about anything from Wagner's Ring Cycle

Actually my all time favorite was from Luciano Pavarotti when he sing with Bono from U2 for Sarajevo... I am a big fan of Luciano and I went to its funeral

Another song also made famous by Peter Paul & Mary would have been more appropriate for that occasion: Leaving On a Jet Plane.

"Started humming a song from 1966"

The song that blew my mind when it was released, and I think it's still my all-time favourite, was Elusive Butterfly by Bob Lind. Whether it particularly related to me is debatable though - most of his songs were about boy/girl relationship problems, and while some love songs can be reinterpreted as same-sex attraction, most of his were pretty obviously heterosexual in their tone.

Another song that really got to me was Tar and Cement, by Verdelle Smith. This song came out just as the western world was experiencing the first stirrings of the environmental awareness movement; people were starting to talk about issues of air and water pollution, bad urban planning and the way in which urban sprawl kills the countryside that is displaces while not succeeding in enriching the lives of those for whom it was designed. I was aware of these issues from an early age, and this song probably played a part in that.

I'm a huge opera fan.
In Wagner's Ring Cycle, one of the best aria's I've ever heard is
James Morris singing Wotan. Leb wohl, du kühnes, herrliches Kind.
James Morris singing the Te Deum, or Va Tosca from Tosca is
unbelievable also. You can't find that anywhere though. He sung it live in a Richard Tucker celebration or tribute show.
I have it somewhere on VHS but the quality just sucked because I couldn't get good reception in those days.

There are far to many singers and arias to name. I don't think I could ever pick out one.
Jerry Hadley I thought was fabulous, and I was broken hearted when I learned he had committed suicide.

I would have started an opera thread a long time ago, but there were so few on here that enjoyed that music that the thread would just be my posts.:p

Well Tom I would be for sure writing with you on that one, I am an aficionado when it comes to classical music, jazz and opera. I was raised into a musical family. We all sing, dance and play a musical instrument. I know it's rare to see a black dude enjoying those kind of music but I wasn't raised by a black family either (which in a way doesn't explain my love for classical music & opera) but yeah a thread on classical music and chant wouldn't be such a bad idea... or we can just keep chatting about it on this thread.;)
