Well the good news is that the disturbances seem to have come to an end... but I wonder what the weekend may bring? Hopefully no re-occurrences as 5 deaths, many jobless & 100+ people homeless due to properties being burnt-out and damage in excess of £200 million is more than enough.

As to the lively discussions here regarding the cause of the trouble - well we all have strong opinions moulded by our own background; upbringing; politics; viewpoints etc. etc. and after robust arguement it's good to be able to agree to dissagree.

As to my thoughts on the subject well the fact that we have had 11 & 12 yr olds; teenagers, 20+ and all the way up to the mid 40's and students, employed & unemployed; black, white & asian says it's simply greed and lawlessness. Determining the reason behind that lawlessness is another matter. Poverty and deprivation? well they might play a part with some of those involved but there are parts of Scotland, Sth Wales and the North East of England that are suffering terribly from high unemployment and lack of investment - but there were no riots or looting there, and as stated before some looters were using expensive smart phones to organise. Anti-establishment? well unlike the recent protests at the G12 and G20 meetings and in Greece against the cuts there was no specific targeting of buildings or corporate symbols, yes some police stations and banks were attacked... but so were carpet stores, restaurants and clothes shops! Some are blaming a lack of discipline within the family and schools resulting in kids with no self-esteem or respect for others and property, and some are blaming the EU policy banning the slapping of children and the reduction of teachers powers for that. Others go for lack of father-figures, or social exclusion, and the get rich quick/famous for 15 mins culture as portrayed by the XFactor/Britains Got Talent... I've even seen Gangsta Rap culture sited as a factor along with the "obscenely high salaries paid to prima-donna footballers"

Who knows for sure, certainly not me but I guess that sociologists, criminologists and psychologists will write essays and books about it and make a small fortune on the lecture circuits.

And whatever we decide and whatever changes we make my guess is that sadly at some time in the future it will all happen again :(. I just wish I was wrong.

I read on the BBC that some european countries are wondering if they are going to be next.

btw: You may have heard mention of the UK Prime Minister holding sessions of the COBRA emergency commitee... a great sounding name maybe but it has nothing to do with the snake. It comes from the room the meetings are held in:
Cabinet Office Briefing Room A ...

Interesting to think what would have happened if they had met in either

Goverment Anteroom Y

Cabinet Office Cubicle K

National Emergency Room D or

Cabinet Utilities Meetingroom

Got some more :

Strategic Emergency Management Enclosure N

Facilities Ante Room T

Parliamentary Response Initiatives Chamber K

That's certain at least...

It seems to be in the air elsewhere too. I hope governments don't start blabbering again about how the Internet should be controlled more and other things that are only about controlling and restraining communication and people.

Well there has been talk here about switching Twitter and BBM off to prevent the rioters planning ahead, but that would penalise everyone else... and these sites can be used for good as well as bad,Twitter was used to organise a community clean up:

Flipping hell - did the Arab Spring pass utterly un-noticed by David Cameron or something? As Mubarak how well blocking the internet and phones worked out for his attempts to kill communication and organisation!

I feel that this thread was a fantastic exercise in civilized debate. We didn't riot or trash the servers or our own computers. Despite some very strenuous disagreements with others' principles and points of view, I believe that we cross-communicated rather well. a tribute to everyone here.

While I am a stubborn guy who demands lots of validation before I change my mind (NO, how could you guess;)), I learned a good deal about a few posters and their alternate (different to mine) views of this issue. For that I extend my thanks.

I have to say that there were times when I was worried, but in the end I'd say this discussion went quite well :thumbs up:

Who knows, maybe some day you and 777 will agree on something

Whisper, if I take 777's points individually without reference to the riot, just as social science, I am pretty much on track with what she has said. I intended to focus, in this thread, on the riot and what I saw as the cause. Of course, there was significant contention on that one issue - but I pushed back on the basis of "just the riot" and not the dynamics of social conditions - which are abysmal.

Now that authorities seem to have brought things under more control, I totally agree with 777 and others who state the need for a restructuring and a revamping of many areas of life in the UK.

The latest on the 5 people murdered is that police have arrested suspects in all cases.
