Thanking before watching ?

Hey,

I'm really surprised to see on more and more posts : "Contains hidden content : You will have to click 'thank you' to see hidden content"

Dear members, I'm totally OK to thank you for the vid your uploaded if it's hot... but NOT before watching !

The forums now look like a crazy competition between uploaders to become the most thanked contributor on GH :worried:

I thought the idea of a gay forum was to freely share ideas, pics and vids... but I was maybe wrong. What do you guys think ?

:duh:

The problem is that by thanking, we have a record of who used the link and has been responsible for our being able to catch several thieves who steal others links to copy using rapidleech or similar programs

It has also helped to catch those who are reporting to the studios.

The hide feature also helps to protect links so that they last longer.

You would be surprised. Some people upload because they want to share, that they even took the time to upload and make screen caps and finally post it all. Just a little thanks goes a long long way.

People have download my videos earlier videos (no links hidden) with little people actually bothered to press thanks. Was it hot? Well let's say I posted part 2 of the video and a significant number of people downloaded it as well - and yet the number of thanks I received did not correlate.

And what's wrong with pressing thanks? The fact that you downloaded the video, whether it was hot or not, should be enough - it takes ages to upload especially when the internet connect is super slow, pressing thanks takes 2 seconds. And darling, last time I check, pressing thanks didn't cost you an arm, leg or your sweet cherry for that matter.

I think there is definitely more than 1 reason why people hide links, some of which Voyager as stated. But for me, personally, it's a little payback for being bothered to share the video. I don't know if people think of it as a 'competition'.

I can't agree more with what Poison824 said.

@ Unpredictable: U shouldn't see it as competition, I do not care about, these are just numbers ;)
Same is with the post-count,it doesn't really state the activity of a member, for example its easy to flood the "game threads" with replys, i guess some ppl misusing that simply to get a higher status... 100's of my posts were deleted in the meantime because of dead links which was not caused by me, and these costs me not only a minute to make these like a reply in this game threads. So mabe i would be also "Clinically Insane" in the meantime :D

But hey! Who really cares? ;)

Thank you for your kind explanations

I do understand and agree about the downloading links... but I'm still very surprised to see those "hide features" in streaming forums :?

It would be hypocritical to deny that it flatters my ego when I get thanked for a post. Especially at the time, that I started posting things. But in fact it is a bit strange mechanism. The numbers of thanks don’t give information about the quality of a post. Especially in cases of hidden content, where each download give a “Thanks” message. Being interested in value judgments of our members, I never use the hidden content option. Experience learned me that one “Thanks message” is an equivalent for about 10 to 20 actual downloads (I can see that on my Rapid Share account). It is still no conclusive evidence for a value judgment; but some indication. When there are moreover some positive reactions I can be pretty sure that the post was appreciated.
The mechanism functions better for artistic posts. They will be downloaded by only a small group of enthusiasts (so only 10 to 50 downloads instead of 200 up to 800 for normal XXX posts). Getting 5 or 10 “Thanks” in such a case can’t be the result of pure politeness, but must be an indication of appreciation. It encourages me to make those videos. Because it is nice to share things, to know that you pleasure others. That is in my opinion what Gay Heaven is all about, sharing is caring.

If you turn the concept upside-down and ask "why don't people deserve thanks for all their hard work, even if the video turns out not to be to your taste afterall?" then I think there would be very little debate.

If you see the caps and decide you want to download the video then I think it is ENTIRELY appropriate to thank the uploader. So what if you change your mind later and decide you don't like it afterall - does that diminish the work the uploader did?

If you download, you should thank, simple as that IMO.

Please don't misunterstand me, I'm really supportive and always glad to thank contributors for the good work they're doing here :thumbs up:

But please try to understand my point of view too : I'm the kinda guy that always says "thanks" when given a present... Now imagine one of your relatives saying "Hey, I spent time and money for you. Now thank me or else you won't get your present"... Sadly, that's how some (I'm not saying all of them of course) GH posts look like

But as we know, the mechanism of forcing users to be logged in a click a button to see content has many positive effects. Perhaps it's just the name of the button you have an issue with?

Perhaps it's a practical -v- emotional issue?

This could be. For myself, I don't particularly like having to automatically say "thanks" just to get the download URL. However I recognize the value in doing things this way, as explained by the admin folk. If there is a way to add the coding for a "Reveal" button in the VBulletin software that would accomplish the same thing (and log the user's screen name somewhere for the mods and admins), that might be a better workaround.

Actually hawtsean is right! Also other forums actually hide all the list of users who thanks and just state the number. Sooo like 5140 people said Thanks! to this post instead of a whole long list of usernames.

I think that feature would definitely make the posts look neater and less of a hassle to scroll down.

I haven't run into one of those "thank you to see links" posts in a long time, so I don't see it as a big issue--the people who post original content that I'm after don't use it. But, I do press thanks before I download often--sometimes if I'm browsing and see a clip I like and might want to download someday, thanking it indexes it in my 'posts thanked by ritsuka' lists and thus allows me to surf back to it very easily at a later point, and thanks the person for putting up a clip/vid that looks really good.

On second thoughts you may be right, why is this button called "thanks" btw ? There should be 2 buttons : One called "I'm really teased and wanna watch now !" and the other "Thanks, that hot vid got me totally horny !" :p

I don't mind thanking for links to content. However when some people decide it's okay to play "hide the screenshots", then it becomes a bitch-and-a-half.
