I remember when Beckenbauer won the World Championship as a player in 1974 and (West) Germany hosted the championship. I was 14 years old and it was the very first time I watched a soccer world championship on TV. Memories...
Btw, he's one of only three men to have won the World Cup both as a player and as a manager.

I remember when he was the coach when (West) Germany won the tournament in 1990, a symbolic moment for a country in the midst of reunification, months after the Berlin Wall fell.

Yeah I know!!! Beckenbauer was one of the truly great persons in world football!!!

But 1990 is also an ominous year... As you know better than all of us, we would soon get all the wars in former Yugoslavia. The 1990s became an absolutely horrible decade and I'm scared to think about the times we live in right now. Will it get as bad and bloody as the 1990s but on a larger scale?

Oh Gorgik9 I hope from deep of my heart that no bad things will happen. But I've read what a Swedish Minister has said - and honestly I was very scared!

Melanie SAFKA (1947)
US Singer, Songwriter

Melanie became known in the late 1960s New York folk scene, but broke into the mainstream when she performed at Woodstock. Her first radio hit was her song about Woodstock, "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)". That was followed by "Beautiful People", and a few years later her number 1 hit, "Brand New Key".

Chita RIVERA (1933)
US Actor, Singer, Dancer

Although she made notable contributions to movies and television, Rivera was revered on Broadway. She was already a young star by the time she played Anita in West Side Story (1957) (introducing the songs "America" and "A Boy Like That") . She starred opposite Dick Van Dyke in Bye Bye Birdie in 1960 - another huge hit. She created the role of Velma in Chicago and Aurora in Kiss of the Spiderwoman. She was last on Broadway in 2015 in The Visit.

Donald McNichol SUTHERLAND (1935)
Canadian actor and anti-war activist whose film career spanned over seven decades. He received numerous awards including an Emmy Award, and two Golden Globe Awards. I guess he will be best known recently for the Hunger Games series but he started out with lots of TV work then came The Dirty Dozen and then the big break as the lead in M*A*S*H then just to pick out a few from his many many movies there was Animal House; Outbreak; Backdraft; Eye Of The Needle; Invasion Of The Body Snatchers; Don't Look Now; The Eagle Has Landed; Kelly's Heroes; JFK: Ordinary People.

For me what came straight to mind when I heard the news was his portrayal of the laidback/hippie tank commander "Oddball" from the wonderful Kelly's heroes. RIP .................. and "Woof Woof!"

I recently heard about Sven-Göran "Svennis" Eriksson passing away because of his cancer. Very sad. He was such a profile in Swedish and European - Italian in particular - football. He will be missed all over Europe.

Toumani DIABATE (1965)

Malian musician Toumani Diabaté was the undisputed master of the kora, the stately and stirring 21-stringed harp that is the most important classical instrument of West Africa. He played at festivals and concert halls around the world, and worked both as a soloist and with a remarkable array of other artists. Coming from the Griots, a caste of traditional musicians and historians, he said he had traced his family back 71 generations - with the skills being passed down from father to son. He regularly performed with his son Sidiki

Rebecca CHEPTEGEI (1991) - Ugandan Olympic marathon runner, who made her Olympic debut at the 2024 Summer Games in Paris

The news about Rebecca Cheptegei is truly awful and painful. May she rest in peace. We need to do more as a global community to tackle gender based violence.
