This is one of my favorite musicians. The way his life ended was so tragic but he was so inspiring:
He died on this day 10 years ago in Roswell, Georgia, from complications of diabetes.
A hero to the civil rights movement of the 1960s due to his innovative R&B mixing socially conscious lyrics with a gospel basis as front man of the group The Impressions, Curtis Mayfield later became part of the change in black music as it transitioned from 1960s soul to 1970s funk with the releases of his albums Curtis (1970) and Superfly (1972). His signature hits included "People Get Ready", "Amen", "We're a Winner", "Choice of Colors", "It's All Right" (the first five as member of the Impressions) and (as a solo artist) "Move On Up", "If There's a Hell Below", "Freddie's Dead" and "Superfly". Mayfield was a talented songwriter, producer, singer, arranger, composer and musician (guitar, saxophone, keyboards). Mayfield's 1970s music later influenced hip-hop. On August 13, 1990, while performing in Brooklyn, a stage rig fell atop Mayfield crushing his vertebrae. He wouldn't walk again, being paralyzed from the neck down. He spent the next nine years of his life in a wheelchair. His last album was 1996's New World Order. Mayfield was inducted twice to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as member of the Impressions and as a solo artist. Mayfield later contracted diabetes and had his legs amputated. A Chicago native, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia in the 1980s and later settled in Roswell, Georgia where he eventually sucbed to his complications.
