I will explain this post when the Poll has been here for 48 hours. So I have some data to go off of.

How many people here have a Laptop or a Desktop with a touchscreen. I don't mean a tablet or a smartphone or a netbook. I"m strictly speaking of personal computers ie desktops and laptops.

Thanks Josh.

Okay I'll give. You've all seen the new Windows 8 commercials right. They marvel all these new great touchscreen features but correct me if I'm wrong isn't it kinda true that 90% of America doesn't even own a desktop or a laptop with a touchscreen therefore making all of the grand new features on windows 8 useless? They came out with this operating system that is largely touchscreen based and yet at the time most computer manufactures only had 2 maybe 3 touchscreen computers in there line up. Its like computer companies are scrambling to get the touchscreen computer to the spotlight. Idk maybe I'm nuts.

It's for the future I guess. Computer has to evolve somehow. This is just another possible step. Ten years from now, who knows what we will be dealing with.

Josh Windows 8 wasn't created for Laptop and or Desktops, it was created for tablets and phones, Microsoft has launched its new tablet and also launch the new Nokia phone which is enabled for windows 8, the emphasis wasn't placed on laptops and/or desktops at all. I have a genuine business version of it and frankly I'll stick to windows 7 and windows xp for as long as I can. I am a clean freak... I hate seeing fucking finger trails on any screen... my IPhone drives me nuts because it's always darn dirty... I gave the touch screen laptop to my daughter, and left the darn touch screen desktop in the rec room so my Boy and Husband can both play their stupid game without using a remote :)

But the commercials show Windows 8 being used as a regular desktop computer os and I was just saying that I don't think the laptop and desktop has made the leap to the phone and tablet side like the operating systems have.

So you believe anything you see in commercial :))

I was from the inside of Microsoft, sure the commercial does target home users and you should see what's going on on the partner side at Microsoft, manufacturer are almost forced to take the new technology turns... Microsoft came up with a touchscreen enabled solution, well that's beneficial for the retail industry, a huge business that Microsoft haven't completely invaded yet... sure they have their tablets and phone, but the very new version of Microsoft Dynamics CRM and AX will now have this touch screen capability... bringing a new competitive ground for all the other ERP (Enterprise resource planning) software. The marketing plan of Windows 8 isn't just for the end of years, it's a 10 years phase plan which will be introducing many other industry to use windows 8 without the need of using additional third party software.

My version of Windows 8 isn't even sold on the market yet  it will be released and commercialize in March. Even though on all OS from Microsoft now... only the product key decides which version is enabled.

Oh and Josh Windows 8 is a multiplatform... want to see your desktop... press on the windows key, want to remove the apps... just toggle to the charm menu... go to settings and remove the apps belt from showing and voila you have a genuine windows application opening on your desktop each and everytime... only problem your forever start button doesn't appear anymore... but few line of code and you can put an icon that would do pretty much the same.

My point is that Microsoft is advertising Windows 8 as a touchscreen os for you home desktops and I'm just saying that most people don't have touchscreen monitors for their desktops. Their advertising all of this stuff that most people won't be able to use (unless you have a phone or a tablet then hey that's not a desktop computer it's a mobile device).

Look just my opinion and when it comes to believing stuff in commercials well its a Microsoft commercial talking a Microsoft product.

Astuce: Don't use "fucking finger" on any touch-screen right after you've finger fucking! :p (sorry couldn't help it!)

Tell that to my dudes Liam and Alex when they watch porn they flip the screen pictures with their fingers covered of lubricant... and guess who get to clean it... and really finger fucking doesn't do anything to Alex now... he need at least three fingers :))

And if you were in Marketing you would quickly understand that there's few laptops coming in the market... visio per example, which has had a direct partnership with Microsoft... Toshiba, HP, Lenovo were all among the invitees in the MS Convention 2 months ago... yes right now you are maybe right to say that 99% of Americans doesn't own a touchscreen laptop or desktop... but how long do you really think this odd will last.

They are advertising it because they want to create the need Josh... it is Marketing 101 at its best sorry... what do you think will happens in less than 2 years... your 90% will drop to 85% because their ads will have succeed in creating this useless need among the feeble minded who needs to get the very last technology as soon as it gets out... and that is a lot of people at once.

Not saying that you're not right... you are... but ask an intern from Microsoft and you'll get your answer... which I just gave you:cheers:

Baby steps. When I can trust the kids with my computer without supervision, they can have a nice fancy one. If they can take care of it, it would be nice to have a computer I don't have to show them how to use.

Microsoft have decided that what is needed is one OS design for all devices. You see this very strongly in their ads when they show the tiles on a phone, a surface, and a computer next to each other.

If you have only a superficial understanding of HCI (Human Computer Interaction) then this actually seems like a fantastic idea. I learn to use on MS device and I can use them all - win!

Unfortunately, if you scratch the surface even a little (forgive the pun), things start to fall apart quickly. Touch is utterly impractical for large devices like desktops and big laptops, and pointers are a terrible idea for small portable devices. Fingers and mouse pointers are very very different things, and need different interfaces to work well. What MS have done is ignored this obvious reality and carried on regardless. Believe it or not, even their new server OS is tiles and touch - bloody SERVERS!

The thing is, it gets even worse, because Microsoft have NOT made one OS that works on all devices, they have made three different OSes that look superficially the same but can't run each other's apps. You have the real Windows 8 for desktops, laptops, and the pro version of the surface (which is not out yet), you have Windows RT for the current version of the surface, and you have Windows Phone 8 for their smart phones. People are unlikely to confuse the phone OS with either of the two computer OSes, but Windows 8 and Windows RT is a customer's nightmare. Try explaining to your parents that although this tablet looks identical to this one, both can run some apps but only one can run other apps. Their heads will explode!

Now - lets only look at the real Windows 8, the one for Intel CPUs. This one has to run on everything from a surface pro tablet up to big desktop machines. Tiles that look good on a tablet will look utterly stupid on the 27" display! There is also the fact that I would need biceps like popeye to use touch on a 27" display for even an hour, let alone a working day! Then you have the converse, Office on the surface is a complete joke because people's fingers are not small enough to hit the right controls. So, you have to use a mouse on your tablet - what a way to utterly ruin the whole point of tablets!

Also - I agree with Jake, I REALLY don't want finger prints on my 27" desktop display!

As someone who studied and lectured computer science at university I could literally write a thesis crammed full with citations to explain just why Microsoft have made the wrong decision. Making three OSes look like one results in three bad OSes and a bunch of confused users.

Finally - two other points:

1) there IS a good way to add touch to desktops - don't have the touch surface on the screen, have it on the desk! This is the route Apple have gone and I just love it. I can get so much more done with my Magic Trackpad and it's multi-touch gestures than I can with any mouse.
2) even if you only look at how Windows 8 works on just a tablet or just a PC, it's STILL badly designed from a user interface point of view. One of the leading lights in the field of human computer interaction is Jakob Nielsen, and his analysis of Windows 8 is absolutely damning: http://refhide.com/?http://www.useit.com/alertbox/windows-8.html

Bottom line - you can tell Microsoft is run by an MBA and not a techie. Steve Balmer may well be a very accomplished business man (despite Microsoft's stock being stagnant for years), but he is a complete fool when it comes to understanding tech. For proof, just read the crap he was saying 5 years ago, and see how well his pontifications have stood the test of time - spoiler - BADLY!

You are mixing the marketing message with the technology and being surprised that the two don't mesh. Well, welcome to Microsoft where the engineers invent the future and the PR people try to make sense of it all.

The marketing message de jure is "Wouldn't you like a nice new touch-screen laptop for Christmas?!" Intel's product sales are down and no one is expecting a big rush to buy desktops for the holidays. Ultrabooks haven't sold so well, so touch-screens are a shot at boosting sales.

Looking at it another way, Windows 7 (as much as we love it) was salvation for upgraders burned by Vista, but had no sex appeal to move new computers off the shelves. For the marketing guys, that the reason Windows 8 exists.

Maybe I'll throw in the very different view from the techie side tomorrow. I'm beat now and I have to drive back over the river and through the woods tomorrow so that I'm ready for work on Monday.

You couldn't be more correct about Balmer, saw him in a convention where he had a hard time understanding how his own cellphone works. He isn't a techie at all... he's all about marketing and business administration... but don't ask him to fix the sound level on a Microsoft's Roundtable Conference phone, he'll be looking for a button when there's none LOL (well at least for the newest models).
