Mr Bates vs. The Post Office (2024)

"One of the greatest miscarriages of justice in British legal history where hundreds of innocent sub-postmasters and postmistresses were wrongly accused of theft, fraud and false accounting due to a defective IT system." (1mdb)

I was in tears watching every single episode! The most outrageous thing is that this is NOT a work of fiction, but desperately sad depiction of true events that befell and still befalls over 3.500 subpostmasters in Britain from 2001 to date. A story that shouldn’t have happened and is a disgraced it ever did! Be prepared to get angry, very angry!!! 👿

Towards Zero (BBC iPlayer, released March 2025). A very belated "Christmas gift" from the BBC; for the Brits, it's now quite traditional to "receive" a usual holiday Agatha Christie murder mystery as a reward for dutifully paying the yearly TV licence fee. The title and the narrator suggest that a murder is not the end-point that happens out of the blue, but rather, trying to understand the genesis or when the idea was first thought of, is the more vital thing. Everything else that comes after, are actions taken one after another as it hurtles towards point zero of the murder itself.

A handsome production set in the prewar years, with impeccable sets, location & costumes, and a beguilingly handsome lead (very nice eye-candy). One clever device used was the colour palette, with the mansion where the murder takes place which is surrounded by the sea, is depicted as implacably grim and grey, as if the pall of death hung over it by day and night. By contrast, it was entirely gay (in the old sense of the word) and almost technicolor in the cheerful world of the nearby hotel where the guests escape to for desperate relief from the tension and angst at the mansion where they are all somewhat unwillingly thrown together.

As usual, the protagonist is an ageing matriarch, surrounded by greedy, grasping offspring, all of whom cannot wait to inherit their portion of what has been promised or hoped for in the estate. But who will be bumped off first, and who will be left standing at the end? This three-part series while perhaps not the best production from the BBC in this fashion - my favourite being "Witness for the Prosecution" - is still a satisfying three-parter that will keep one quite engrossed right till the very end.

INVISIBLE BOYS (2025)

A new LGBTIQ+ Stan Originals television series, adapted for the screen by creator/director Nicholas Verso based on the award-winning novel by Holden Sheppard. Set against the backdrop of the 2017 same-sex marriage plebiscite, INVISIBLE BOYS explores the challenges faced by a group of gay teens in the remote coastal town of Geraldton, Western Australia, after one of them is outed on social media following an encounter with a married man. As they form a tight-knit friendship, the boys find solace and support in one another, exploring their desires and identities in a world that often renders them invisible. Imdb

I'm 4 episodes in (there are 10 in total) and enjoying it. It's well acted and great camerawork shows off some off the beauty of the area. It deals with some stromg themes - adolecence; isolation; 1st nation; prejudice. As it's an Australian show it is quite a bit raunchier than it might have been if made elsewhere

This show is a blessing. It's very funny, smart, realistic, impertinent... There are great characters. I think I never watched such a great LGBT show since QAF.

HIGH POTENTIAL (2024- )

Morgan, a single mom with three kids and an exceptional mind, helps solve an unsolvable crime when she rearranges some evidence during her shift as a cleaner for the police department. When they discover she has a knack for putting things in order because of her high intellectual potential, she is brought on as a consultant to work with a by-the-book seasoned detective, Karadec. Together they form an unusual and unstoppable team. IMDB

Just finished Season 1, very entertaining and funny in places. The finale has 2 cliff-hanger plot lines so I'm guessing they were planning/hoping that it would be popular enough for a Season 2

Thank you, Slimjim - I wasn't sure if it would be a serial from interest. Now we will watch it as well. Once more thank you for
your recommendation.

I have just watched the last 2 episodes of this excellent series - WOW! Powerful stuff. A highly recommended series, well written and produced. The writer of the original novel wrote the screenplay and directed the show. A great cast and some excellent cinematography and production values for a TV show.

MOBLAND (2025 - )

Harry Da Souza is called upon to make a problem disappear after a night out goes awry for the sons of two warring crime families. As boss Richie Stevenson looks to pin blame, patriarch Conrad Harrigan gathers his clan with a plan.

So Guy Ritchie directs and the cast list has Tom Hardy; Pierce Brosnan; Helen Mirren; Paddy Constantine. I just watched the 1st episode and definitely will be watching all 10 as they become available.

PRIME TARGET (2025 - )

A young mathematician is on the verge of a breakthrough when he realizes an unseen enemy is trying to destroy his idea; together with a government agent who's been tracking him, he begins to unravel a conspiracy.

This was prompted by one of those "other programmes you might like..." algorithms, and it was right. I have the 2nd episode of Mobland but want to wait until ep 3 has dropped before watching and so I grabbed this series. The plan was just to watch the 1st episode but I got sucked into the cliffhanger plot and have watched the first 3 episodes.
