it just seems like we go from dipers to a less noticeable one
You wear underwear so all the sweat and stuff from around your junk gets caught there, so you can change those daily instead of needing to change your pants every day! It has nothing to do with pee or poo, but with saving you on laundry. Historically, people simply couldn't AFFORD to own enough pants to change them often, so I'm guessing that's where the idea comes from. Still makes sense now though - at least if you do your own laundry.
