i am running windows 7 now and i love it. There aren't many graphical differences, but my comp runs a lot smoother. ONe of my favorite new things is the way the pages are organized. YOu kinda have to see it fro your self. and btw i got mine like 3 weeks ago through a free upgrade form sony. I do however know ppl with toshiba and dell that are still waiting for theirs. And yes it was TRULY free, hell they even threw in an extra one! I however don't think its is worth it to spend 219+ usd for an upgrade.

EDIT: i had xp on my old computer and it was not all that nice compared with the new windows. The only real pain is some programs might not work on windows 7 yet. But my only issue was with hotspot and they immediately rolled out a new version that was compatible.

I just got a new computer that came with Windows 7 and its a biiiiig step ahead of Vista. The way the desktop changes every 30 seconds or whatever is insane.

There was a report on the BBC website about a "black screen of death" that a lot have suffered since downloading a recent update.

It didn't just affect W7, but Vista & XP users!!

I'm still running on win 98 SE !!! And all the programs and video players and codecs and files still work fine. I mainly just surf the net so I've survived long enough that way but it is time for me to cave and upgrade....to windows XP! Isn't it true to get a computer that will run windows 7 smoothly you have buy a top of the line PC? I can find a 200$ refurbished systems that can run XP...as long as it still works i'll cling to whatever I can get at an affordable price.

Mainly because the PC I have that's survived for so long cost me 2500$ at the time (2000) just as prices went down...I'll never do that again.

This is what happened to me about a week ago, after I built this new machine from spare parts, it was working fine until I downloaded all the updates, then nothing...

I'd turn it on and just see black. I didn't know what it was until I saw this today...

http://anonym.to/?http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34223754/ns/technology_and_science-security

Because I didn't have an XP cd and I couldn't find one anywhere (all the stores say they can't sell them anymore) I was forced to use Vista from my old computer...

I have been keeping the updates turned off every since...

Personally, I don't think the timing of this is coincidence. Right after the release of 7 and just before Christmas... I think Microsoft did it on purpose to force you to upgrade to 7...

UPDATE

From the BBC Website -

Malware has been blamed for a problem with the Windows 7 operating system, dubbed the 'Black Screen of Death'.

Some Windows users are confronted by a totally black screen after they log on to their system.

Initially it was thought that Microsoft's own security update could have caused the problem but that has now been ruled out.

The software firm that suggested the security update was the problem has apologised for its claims.

Reports suggest the problem also affects Windows Vista and XP.

In a blog posting on its security site, Microsoft said that it had investigated the claims and "found that our November Security Updates are not making changes to the system that these reports say are responsible for these issues".

The firm said that the behaviour was associated with malware, such as Daonol, and that this was probably the root cause.

Software firm Prevx, who had said the November update may have been to blame, have since retracted their statement, saying it had been a "challenging issue" to identify the cause.

"Having narrowed down a specific trigger for this condition we've done quite a bit of testing and re-testing on the recent Windows patches including KB976098 and KB915597 as referred to in our previous blog," the firm wrote on its website.

"Since more specifically narrowing down the cause we have been able to exonerate these patches from being a contributory factor."

Prevx apologised to Microsoft for "for any inconvenience" its earlier claims may have caused.
