I was uploading a video to XTube, and I got a warning message because I'd used a word they have decided is bad - 'shit'.

This is a site for adults only, where explicit sex of all sorts is shown, somehow, people into porn are going to be offended by the word 'shit' - really? Seriously?

This is so insane I had to check it was not April 1st today

Talk about PC gone completely bonkers!

It could be they're trying to keep scat videos off their site. Even for an adult site, scat kinda veers into the extreme fetish territory.

There are people who enjoy it, both gay and straight. It's not something that appeals to me, personally.

Well - it was defeated with the cunning deployment of a 1 to replace the i - so really, why bother!

I think it has to do with trying to avoid scat porn (or any of those not so openly spoken about fetishes).. trust me.. some of the things I've stumbled onto on some of those tube sites got me passing out at my desk, lol! so I see their point.

On the other hand, it is pointless really, because all you have to do is mislabel the video and the content is live until someone reports it.

And, lol when I read the description I was just about to run off to the streaming section to see if there was something I missed :p

I'll tell you what in the heck I think is weird...

XTube seems to censor the use of the word 'sleeping'.

Now, why in the world is that a "bad" word?

Well GB I am about to run a porn site and yes I did also block the word shit, but I changed my mind and put a button to report any scat video, because I really really really don't want to see people playing with their caca or somebody's Oh Henry. I'll flag those SOB down. I have put two buttons, flag and scat and when I'll see scat the dude posting it will immediately be bared from the site. Scat is just gross, and when you have been changing baby diapers twice you just wonder what the fuck they find exciting is this.

Leaving aside the question of what text should be allowed and what shouldn't, censoring certain words is just such a crude and ineffective filtering tool. Some years ago I posted a message on a gay forum - quite a long message - and got a red response back that my post was banned, with no reason given. I could see nothing abusive or inflammatory in my post at all, so I reworded it slightly and tried again... same result. To cut a long story short, I eventually deduced that the rejection was because the post contained the word "skilled", and the filter had picked up "kill" or "killed".

On another forum - a music forum - I posted a comment about the singer Joe Cocker, and the forum's net nanny changed it to "Joe Thingyer".

On a more serious note, I have heard stories about people unable to access articles about breast cancer, because some filter blocked pages containing the word "breast".

The best way - the only good way in my opinion - to regulate site usage is to have a clear set of do's and dont's, and to enforce them by having a "Report Infraction" button. Of course that only works if there are people actually looking after the site.

It's not very often that people would find reason to discuss shitake mushrooms, unless it was a mushroom fanciers' hobby site or one dedicated to recipes or restaurants, but if people want to talk about shitake mushrooms they should be able to do so without fear of being castigated by some net filter.
