You are not far off....the monastery is in the town of Leh, which is in the state of Jammu & Kashmir - the most northerly part of India, bordered by Pakistan to the west and Tibet to the east.
Now it starts making sense to me: Leh is the capital of the old traditional kingdom of Ladakh, the northernmost part of what is now the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India. It's politically a part of India, but religiously and culturally deeply influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. Actually I thought the architecture reminded me a lot of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet!
