The name of this town in California comes from a Chumash Indian word. The Chumash were the original inhabitants of several parts of California. Pismu was their word for tar, natural deposits of which were found in a canyon near the beach.

The inspiration for James Michener's Bali Hai.

I love the South Pacific but the closest I came to Bora Bora was four days on Tahiti. So close, but so far away.

Korean-American Friendship Bell in San Pedro, CA



The bell and the structure to house it were presented to the U. S. by South Korea for the U. S. Bicentennial in 1976. The bell is only rung twice a year, on July 4th and New Year's Eve.
