It's a remarcable fact that the iconic look of moslem mosques has its origins in the most famous of all cathedrals of the eastern orthodox Christian world, the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople/Istanbul, built by emperor Justinian I in 532-537. When Constantinople fell to the moslems in 1453, the Hagia Sophia was converted to become a mosque.

Yes this awesome construction, with it's dome approx. 30mt across and highest point around 55mt off the ground, has had an interesting history. As you say a cathedral then mosque, then in 1935 it became a museum and so no longer had a religious purpose but earlier this year it was re-designated as a mosque
