Glee is important because it shows gay characters that are just like everyone else, they just have very different challenges. Glee reaches a broad demographic which may not be exposed to anything in the gay community. Hopefully the show helps young gay people who may be going through the same thing. Even if they do break out into song every 2 minutes.
Yeah, it's realistic to have gay characters as flaming queen whose personality revolved around being gay and how hard it is to be gay. They preach about being gay every episode, disregard the fact that homophobic people wouldn't watch the show in the first place. The show doesn't show gay characters as just like everyone else, they show them as better than everyone else. Happy Endings has better portrayal of gays as everyday character.
