Americans 'are not properly cleaning their anuses': Doctors warn toilet paper does little to remove feces - and we should all be using wet wipes

  • Dry toilet paper can leave behind feces or cause someone to excessively wipe
  • Over wiping can create anal fissures or irritate hemorrhoids in the rectum
  • Celebrities such as will.i.am, Will Smith and Terrence Howard have spoken about using baby wipes instead
  • Bidets in toilets are popular in Spain, Italy and Greece but aren't found as often in the United States
Experts warn that toilet paper does little to remove feces and the United States is one country that hasn't improved its sanitation when wiping.

While countries such as Japan, Italy and Greece use bidets in the toilets as a way to keep the anus clean, the US has mostly relied on toilet paper as the norm to keep that area clean.

But doctors say excessive wiping could cause health problems such as anal fissures and urinary tract infections.

Though the suggestion may sound absurd, celebrities such as will.i.am, Will Smith and Terrence Howard have been vouching for baby wipes instead of tissue for years - with Smith even hailing the habit as 'special and incredible'.

Using dry toilet paper to wipe can actually leave behind feces and cause health problems. People who excessively wipe the rectum increase their risk of developing fissures or hemorrhoids

Toilet bidets are one sanitation device that countries such as Italy, Spain and Greece have implemented in most bathrooms to clean the anus after using the bathroom.

According to Tonic, 90 percent of households in Italy, Spain and Greece have a bidet installed in their bathroom for cleaning.

This device squirts water into the area to make cleaning with toilet paper easier.

But it is not as easy to find one of these in a restroom in the United States.

Bidet suppliers have reported that moving into the American market has been more difficult because most people are satisfied with just using toilet paper.

Rose George, author of The Big Necessity: The Unmentionable World of Human Waste and Why It Matters, told Tonic why using toilet paper doesn't remove feces like it should.

'I find it rather baffling that millions of people are walking around with dirty anuses while thinking they are clean,' George said. 'Toilet paper moves sh*t, but it doesn't remove it.'

Will.i.am said in a past interview with Elle Magazine that baby wipes are what most people should consider using in terms of wiping.

'Here's proof on why people should have baby wipes. Get some chocolate, wipe it on a wooden floor, and then try to get it up with some dry towels.

You're going to get chocolate in the cracks. That's why you gotta get them baby wipes,' will.i.am said.

Actor Terrence Howard went as far as to say in an Elle Magazine interview that he didn't trust women who used toilet paper.

‘If they’re using dry paper, they aren’t washing all of themselves. It’s just unclean. So if I go in a woman’s house and see the toilet paper there, I’ll explain this,' Howard said.

Actor and director Will Smith echoed a similar appreciation for baby wipes during a BBC 1 Radio interview.

‘I'm the type of person that it's important for me to share. When I experience something that's special and incredible, I like to share it with people. Anyone who's using dry toilet paper, you're really not doing yourself the true service,' Smith said.

Gwyneth Paltrow, on the the other hand, goes for a more expensive option in terms of sanitation.

She released her Goop gift ideas in 2015 and one of them was a recommendation for toilet paper worth $100.

But if that toilet paper cleaned better than the store brand kind remains unknown.

Cleanliness is not the only reason why people should consider bidets or baby wipes instead.

Aggressive wiping has been known to cause health problems such as anal fissures and hemorrhoids.

An anal fissure is a tear in the lining of the rectum and can cause bleeding or pain for the person when they are pooping.

Most fissures heal at home after eight to 12 weeks, but it is important to be careful when wiping because it can irritate the area.

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins and tissue in the lower rectum and anus. They are more serious than fissures and sometimes can be harder to treat.

External hemorrhoids happen around the rim and are the ones that are typically irritated from excessive wiping, but they can be treated with cream or medication.

Also, bidets can prevent people from developing a urinary tract infection.
If people wipe from back-to-front, they are pulling bacteria from the anus towards the front of the body.

This can impact women especially and cause them to develop at UTI from the bacteria getting into the urethra.

By using a bidet or wet wipe instead, it kills the bacteria and prevents it from infecting the urinary tract.

Well, there you have it. Proof Gay Heaven is not only for porn. It is also educational.

There was another thread where a member discussed his take on how best to clean one's self after a bowel movement. I looked for it so I could post this article there but I couldn't find it.

Just to be clear I already use moist wipes in the manner described and have done so for decades. Our mother taught us to moisten TP to wipe with. She also kept witch hazel by the commode for stubborn situations.

This may not be a discussion everyone wants to chime in on but I hope everyone will read and take heed.

I have used soft TP and keep the hair away from down there and eat lot of fiber, and I've had no problems. This wet wipe thing to me feels just like an attempt to sell people more expensive things to wipe with.

Ofc if one has problems with regular TP, then wet wipes might be the solution. We allready have aloe vera etc. in tissues and toilet papers. Forestry products are kinda our thing:)

I always wonder how it was before civilization. Did people just do nothing? Did they bathe? Did they have parasites? Other animals don't wipe or anything and they seem to do okay.

Are wet-wipes as bio-degradable as toilet paper? If not a major switch to them could result in problems for waste disposal and blocked drains

And healthy poo is not messy. Healthy poo is solid. If your feces are messy, you are not getting enough fiber.

Asswipes With chamomile, cucumber, aloe and vitamin E This wipe is fragrance, alcohol, and paraben free so it’s safe for your ass, crotch, pits, face, and feet. To protect drains a soft mint hands free Dekor Plus disposal pail. Living in a semi-tropical climate with extreme humidity these are a must for keeping fresh between showers.

I don't know why people in the western world make such a fuss about cleaning up with toilet paper or baby wipes after pooping!! The best and most hygienic and environment friendly way to clean up is to use water and your left hand. After cleanup, simply wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap!!

I always wonder how it was before civilization. Did people just do nothing? Did they bathe? Did they have parasites? Other animals don't wipe or anything and they seem to do okay.

In ancient Rome they used dampened sponges to clean themselves. In public latrines they used communal sponges. I can't imagine that was very hygienic, lol.

I'm guessing the sponge was a common method to clean with in most ancient cultures like Greece or Egypt etc. but I can't say I've researched it. I'm sure some of GH's resident scholars can enlighten us more than I can.

As for pre-historic man's toileting hygiene ... back say 1 million years ago or something ridiculous like that ... I would think they may not have had the same sensibility we have of keeping everything 'clean' down there. For another thing their diet would have been fiber much more than protein. The effort to trap or somehow kill an animal was much greater than foraging for edible plants. So their excrement would have been much more robust and less 'messy' such as our diets produce. So they may not have had to do much in the way of wiping etc. That's just my guess.

I've found when my diet has mostly fiber from whole grains and fruit I don't have much of a trace after going #2. When I take in more dairy or meat that's not the case. But still I don't often have much to clean up after, as it were, lol.

People with hemorrhoids do have more to deal with than those without. This is something everyone will learn at some point if they live long enough!

My routine when I wake up is to have breakfast, use the bathroom and then shower. That way I know that I'm clean for the day.

Antibacterial soap kills also good bacteria helpfull to build immune system. Using hand disinfectners is linked to more sickness periods. Ofc there is always individual differences.

Anyways it is horrible that we flush our toilets with fresh drinking water. Would be best if it would be smth less waistfull. Pooping is so enviromemtally dirty. We should just stop pooping.

Most members here would call themselves animal lovers. If you care about our furred and feathered friends at all then think again about wet wipes.
It might say flushable on the packet, that is true, you can flush all kinds of thing down the pan, ammunition, plutonium, broken glass. Don't mean it's a good idea.
Most of them never biodegrade, even the ones that claim degradability don't do it completely. When plastic waste fragments get out in to the environment they will sooner or later find their way in to the animal food chain. No stomach or intestine can deal with this stuff, it only takes a small amount to block the animal's digestion then the poor thing cannot feed and starves to death. For birds it is a particularly painful way to die.
There are some photos of dead birds I could show you that would make you feel sick. I don't want to do that so take my word for it instead.
Please
If you must use these things, incinerate them afterwards, don't flush them into the drains.

For a really really clean anal ring, my tongue does the job more thoroughly than any wetwipe.
