From René Bonnet to Matra-Sports
In 1962, René Bonnet made this interesting coach named Djet starting from a race car with central engine. It is the first car with this arrangement intended for the public. The mechanical come from a Renault 8 and the body, made in polyester resin, is assembled on a tubular frame (then on a beam-frame for the "serie")
Unhappily, René Bonnet in front of huge financial difficulties had to sell his firm to his main creditor Matra, a famous french missile and satellite constructor at this age. This company see here an excellent opportunity to change its image and expect to promote its name throught automobile competition. At the Paris motorshow 1964, René Bonnet became Matra-Bonnet.
On this drawing, we can see easily the location of the Renault motor, in front of the rear wheels.
Matra-Bonnet Djet is different from René Bonnet Djet with its longer rear that allow a bigger trunk. Wider tracks increase the stability of the vehicle. At this age, Matra said that more of hundred modifications were made on the Djet.
In 1965 appear a Luxe version, far from the rusticity of the first René Bonnet Djet.
3 motors :
- Djet V : Renault 8 1100 - 70 ch
- Djet VS : Renault 8 Gordini 1100 - 94 ch
- Jet 6 : Renault 8 Gordini 1300 - 105 ch
Starting 1966 the name Djet become Jet and Matra-Bonnet become Matra (poor René Bonnet!) ; the production stopped in 1968 after 1689 copies made.
