Flaminio Bertoni at Citroën and Louis Bionier at Panhard liked baroc style. Tormented forms, sculptures, various ornaments, each had his personality but both had the same tastes. To soon disappeared, Flaminio Bertoni didn't know the Dyane designed by Louis Bionier and expected to replace the 2CV. At this time Citroën was the owner of Panhard (1965).

Why the inverted rear window on the Ami 6 ?

At the late fifties, Citroën staff asked to the stylist Flaminio Bertoni to draw a saloon four doors with external trunk (3 volumes) in 4 meters. This car would be a kind of luxurious 2 CV or at least a less basic version. The platform, just made longer, would remain the same. Flaminio Bertoni presented his project with the inverted rear window and he said he didn't know how to make a 4 doors saloon, 3 volumes, in 4 meters long with a traditional rear window. It was not the reality as we can see below. Before the production, the future Ami 6 was already controversed!

After the Ford Anglia, Ford came back to a saloon with a classical rear window. It was the Ford Escort in 1968.

Fiat 1100R and especially Fiat 128 were under 4 meters.

The rear body of the first Peugeot 204 was not very pretty with it bumper in 2 parts.
I forgot Renault 8 and Simca 1000, also 3 volumes but with the trunk in front.

Citroën DS21 (Neyret/Terramorsi) London-Mexico Rally 1970
Neyret and Terramorsi competed in the 1968 London-Sydney Marathon, also in a Citroën DS21, finishing in 9th place. This time they failed to reach the finish.

Citroën DS 19 number one at the 42th Paris Motorshow in 1955

News Paris Match had the exclusivity for presenting this expected new model.
To bad this news was not published because of a strike of the book trade union.
The model on the photo is Gina Lollobrigida.

When arrive the time of Paris Motorshow, nobody has still seen this car.
Public curiosity is enormous. A lot of people is waiting for the opening of the Grand Palais doors.

The new Citroën arriving by night on a truck

A large air entrance under the front bumper

The president of Citroën Pierre Bercot is presenting the DS to the French Republic president René Coty who has personally a Traction 15/6 hydropneumatic.

At the opposite of the 2 CV in 1948, the public can see the mechanical.
The apparent complexity under the bonnet is nothing beside a modern car.

The first dashboard designed by Flaminio Bertoni was entirely white.

A comfortable rear seat

At Citroën archives there is some colours pics of this special podium DS 1955, a pre-serie handmade model. Maybe have you also some colours photos of this outstanding motorshow ?
