Front Wheels Drive before the traction Citroën

The first automobile "fardier de Cugnot", a steam machine, was already a front wheels drive. (1769)

Latil 1899 : a traction with cross engine and transmission by cardan, this small car was too in advance for it time.

Miller 1925

Ruxton 1930

Cord L29 1930

Cord 810 1936

DKW F1 1931 from the Danish JS Rasmussen, the first Front Wheels Drive made in serie (before the Citroën). At this time he was known essentialy as a motorbike constructor.

Donnet 2 liters - 6 cylinders - 1931

Adler Trumpf (Germany) 1932 was also the Rosengart Supertraction built under license the same year

Chenard-Walcker Super Aigle 24 - 1934

Bucciali TAV 12 - 1932

Citroën 7A - spring 1934, not the first but it special feature was to assembly on one car numerous modern technicals for it age.

It was "only" a problem of coupling !

To make a front wheels drive, the main difficulty is to realize an efficient transmission between the differential and the front wheels that are steering too. To get a good steering, the immediate speed must be the same at the entrance and at the exit of the transmission. This coupling is named homocinetic.

Left : the simple coupling invented by Girolamo Cardan (16th century) who let his name to this transmission. Not homocinetic.
Right : the double coupling homocinetic

Jean Albert Grégoire and Pierre Fenaille invented this homocinetic coupling and created their own company named Tracta in 1926. Then they became cars constructors and they made one of the first marketed front wheels drive. They sold the license of their coupling to DKW and Adler.

Tracta 1930

Balls coupling Rzeppa

During a long time front wheels drive were equiped with double coupling Cardan type. In seventies balls couplings became at last efficient and replaced the old double cardans.

At this age (1968), if you didn't add "chrono" just after the announced speed nobody believed you !

Between Ami 6 and Ami 8 here is the new Citroën Ami 7 ;)
