Former U.S. president George W. Bush accidentally voted for Barack Obama today at a polling place near his Crawford, TX home.

According to local reports, the two-term Republican was confused by the instructions on his electronic voting machine and mistakenly cast a ballot he intended to discard.

Witnesses say Bush argued with poll workers for several minutes afterwards in a effort to redo his vote, but in accordance with state law they ultimately denied his request.

The embarrassing incident may have gone unnoticed if it weren't for a local newspaper reporter who happened to be voting in the next booth. Suzanna Everett, a politics correspondent for the Waco Times witnessed the entire ordeal and crafted a cunning scheme to make it public.

Left On Red

Barred by ethics rules from using knowledge gained within a polling station, Everett waited for Bush to leave the facility and ambushed him with a trick question designed to fool him into revealing the news himself:

"Mr. President Fox News is reporting that you've accidentally voted for Barack Obama. Would you care to comment?"

Thinking that his mistake had already been found out, Bush sought to minimize the damage:

"Yes unfortunately because of the incompetence of the folks who designed the ballot, my vote counted for the other guy," Bush responded. He then attempted to explain exactly how the mishap occurred:

"First of all, everything was very mismaladjusted on the screen. You shouldn't put the senators and the congresspeople and the presidents all jumbled together like that. It's too crowded. Just confuses folks."

Bush then explained that after marking the wrong candidate, he sought to correct his error by clicking the red "Cast Ballot" button, thinking that it was designed to 'cast away' the ballot and bring up a fresh one:

"Usually red means stop and green means go. I thought I was stopping"

A New Legacy

Bush is no stranger to election day controversy, having been pushed into office himself by the Florida fiasco of 2000. In that election hundreds of votes intended for Democratic rival Al Gore went to protest candidate Pat Buchanan instead due to poor ballot design.

In an official statement released shortly after the event, former President Bush said his experiences today have inspired him to make electoral reform the signature cause of his post-presidency:

"Laura and I will be dedicating the next few years to fixing our electoral system. Every American deserves a clear, simple ballot when they go to the polling place."

However, the system Bush used has been deployed successfully around the country with little incident. A spokesperson for the company that manufactures the machines says they stand by their product:

"Until today we have never had a single instance of someone confusing the "cast ballot" button for a "cast away ballot" button. This is a problem unique to Mr. Bush, and we have no plans to change our machines."

This is thought to be fake, the dailycurrant has form in 'creative' reporting but it is still a jolly good laff, thanks for posting. The fact that so many people find it believable shows what a low opinion they still hold of this man who was such a nightmare for America. Thank god, or whatever you believe in, that the world has been spared another nightmare; that which a Willard Mittens presidency would have been.

Even if not true, it's still a good story. :p It would've been really funny had it been real. Best part is that you can actually imagine this happening. Like dargelos said, it does say a lot of what opinion people have of him. :)

10 out of 10 of the best educated States voted for Obama. 9 out of 10 of the worst educated States voted for Romney

The red States also happen to be the recipients of the most government aid.

It is ironic that the poor, less educated states rail against the government and taxes, but are kept afloat by the tax revenues that flow in from the richer states.

During a private fundraiser earlier this year, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney told a small group of wealthy contributors what he truly thinks of all the voters who support President Barack Obama. He dismissed these Americans as freeloaders who pay no taxes, who don't assume responsibility for their lives, and who think government should take care of them. Fielding a question from a donor about how he could triumph in November, Romney replied:

"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what

GOP are finished if they don't start moderating and start accepting gays, ethnics and women. The white Christian male demographic is becoming extinct. This was definitely their last shot at the election as they stand and they knew it. Gay rights shouldn't be an issue. It's a given everywhere else in the world.

Before and after the election: neither.

I wonder why you feel that way? Is it the candidate, the parties or the system?

The 2nd term is always most exciting as Obama has has a term to get comfy and now he can go balls to the wall with his policies knowing he's not in it for a reelection, he now needs to make his mark. I hope he's as good for America as Clinton was.

They both lie. Both parties are full of screeching extremists. Philosophically, I'm more of a Republican -- smaller government, keep taxes down, control spending.

I think most politicians enter politics with good intentions but then you get the.....electorate. In a way they're almost like children who sometimes need to be told what they want to hear and sometimes you have to do what's right for them.

From a European perspective we have the same problems but as our governments as on the whole secular (no God) we do find a complaint is that whoever you vote in they tend to do the same thing but put their on left or right Wong spin on things.

Running a country is not like running a business where the "right" decisions are fairly obvious, as a politician you have to do what's "popular".

I'm pleased that Obama will bring the US into the 20th century with 'Obamacare', something that has been on the back burner for decades.

Also, I don't believe in a free market any longer. Corporations got too powerful too long ago. I'm not saying its right or wrong, I'm just saying it is. I used to have a black and white view or left vs right but there there is a reality in play. The banks, the recession, the bailouts, etc. That proves we don't have a true free market or true capitalism anywhere in the world.

So for that reason, although I'm pretty right wing on most aspects of running a country I'm drawn to Obama and an element of the left wing because its a counter evil to the two faced evil of the 'privatised profits, publicised losses' corporations who have had their way recently.

Obama really isn't a liberal. Moderate pragmatist would be my label. He seems like a liberal because the republicans are so extreme.
In European terms, he's about the same as David Cameron.
