In 1849 in Kranj the Slovenian poet France Preseren dies. France Preseren is to Slovenians who Goethe is to Germans, Dante to Italians, Robert Burns to Scots, Pushkin to Russians, Mickiewicz to Poles, Shakespeare to English and - I don't know whom to name - to Canadians. The anniversary of his death has become a national holiday, and his poem "Zdravljica" was selected as the text for the national anthem when Slovenia became independent in 1991.
