Today is the day Governor Jan Brewer vetoed the very anti gay bill in Arizona. Why did it take her so long?

In 1984 Michael Jackson won eight awards at the 26th GRAMMYs. His wins included Record Of The Year for "Beat It" and Album Of The Year for ''Thriller''. Jackson still holds the all-time record for most Grammys won in one night (btw, Santana tied Jackson's record in 2000).

In 1879, Albert Einstein is born, the son of a Jewish electrical engineer in Ulm, Germany. Einstein's theories of special and general relativity drastically altered man's view of the universe, and his work in particle and energy theory helped make possible quantum mechanics and, ultimately, the atomic bomb.

Hrmmm...I think you're wrong on quantum mechanics and Einstein...

Einstein would never accept quantum theory fully, since he thought that the fundamental consequence would be, that there wouldn't be any real binding laws in nature on the atomic and sub-atomic level. There's a famous anecdote about this, about a discussion between Einstein and the great danish scientist Niels Bohr, who was one of the founding fathers of quantum physics.

So Einstein said : "I can't accept that God would play dice with the universe!!!"
Bohr, who was the coolest cat ever, said : "And you shouldn't try to tell God what he can't do! That's not YOUR business!!!"

Into his old age, Einstein was trying to design experiments that would prove, that Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg and the quantum theorists were wrong. To no avail.

Without the shadow of a doubt, Albert Einstein was one of the greatest scientists in history. But even Einstein shouldn't tell God what he couldn't do...

Thanks for your kind comment.

I wrote:''...his work in particle and energy theory helped make possible quantum mechanics''. I know his relation to quantum theory was very complex. But in fact he helped invent quantum mechanics. ;)

I guess this could be a matter of semantics, what the expression "he helped invent" should mean. But I won't argue about that kind of booooring niceties...

Today will be remembered by me and many others as the day we mourned the loss of a great man, Tony Benn. Some politicians are respected, some are admired, most are regarded with contempt, few are loved the way he was. It is no tragedy to die after a long and eventful career, we all have to go sometime and it was a peaceful end. When I think of him it will be with deep affection. What more can you ask?

Watch this and remember Tony with a smile.

OK, 'most spoken word on the planet', marks its 175th anniversary!

It will be 175 years since OK - or, as some prefer, okay - first appeared in print, on page two of The Boston Morning Post, then one of the most popular newspapers in the United States.
