In 1969, the Woodstock Music Festival opens on a 600-acre hog farm in the small town of Bethel, New York. On Friday evening, August 15, Richie Havens got up on stage and officially started the Festival. Sweetwater, Joan Baez, and other folk artists also played Friday night. The Festival that involved lots of sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll (plus a lot of mud) has become an icon of the 1960s hippie counterculture.

In 2003, Anna Lindh, a Swedish Social Democratic politician, was fatally stabbed as she shopped with a friend in a busy Stockholm department store. Despite her position as foreign minister she did not have a permanent bodyguard, a situation which was quite normal for senior Swedish politicians. Lindh died the following day after undergoing surgery for more than 10 hours at Karolinska Hospital.

Her killing stirred memories of the murder of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme, who was shot in the back as he walked home from the cinema with his son and his wife in 1986.
