Piramida Hill is a 386 metre high town hill, which rises above the city of Maribor. On the hill was a castle (Marburg or Marchpurg) until the year 1784, which gave the name to the town. It was built in the beginning of the 12th century by the noble Spanheim family for protection the Hungarians. In 1528 the castle was burned down. It was renovated in the Renaissance style around the year 1560, then in 1790 it was finally pulled down.

This 16th century sketch by G.M.Vischer shows the Middle Age town of Marburg surrounded by town walls and a water ditch. On top of the hill to the left sits the Marchpurch castle which gave the name to the town. 7 steep hills arise and surround the city. Castle and town were connected by an underground tunnel, which still exists and is used today as wine cellars. The largest in the world, 2km can be visited starting in the city centre.
