On this day: 4th October

Christians around the world celebrate the Feast of St Francis of Assisi on October 4 each year. The feast commemorates the life of St Francis, who was born in the 12th century and is the Catholic Church’s patron saint of animals and the environment.

St. Francis of Assisi was without a doubt one of the most fascinating figures in the high middle ages. If anyone wants to know a bit about St. Francis and the Franciscan traditions fundamental importance for what we usually call "Renaissance Art", the best thing to do is to watch the following lecture by Andrew Graham Dixon. His long discussion of Francis and what would become Renaissance Art starts at about 9 minutes 40 seconds into the clip!

I've always loved Franco Zeffirelli's film of St Francis's spiritual journey - Brother Sun, Sister Moon (1972).

In 1975, General Franco's dictatorship is effectively ended with the announcement heir designate Prince Carlos will take over as provisional head of state.

General Franco, the most dominant figure in Spain since the time of Philip II, died on 20 November 1975. The decision was made by doctors who had been keeping him alive through 34 days of critical illness.

In his last message to the nation the dictator said: "I ask pardon of all my enemies, as I pardon with all my heart all those who declared themselves my enemy, although I did not consider them to be so."

In 1996, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed November 21 as World Television Day, ''in recognition of the increasing impact television has on decision-making by alerting world attention to conflicts and threats to peace and security and its potential role in sharpening the focus on other major issues, including economic and social issues.''

In 1947, New Zealand ratified the Statute of Westminster, establishing independent control of its own legislation. Before this, New Zealand did not have the power to create or repeal all laws.

The Statute of Westminster Act was passed by the British Parliament in 1931, offering legislative independence for self-governing dominions of the British Empire. The Act removed the ability of the British parliament to legislate for the dominions, and established that no act of its parliament would extend to these territories. New Zealand was reluctant to alter its relationship with Britain however and did not adopt the Act until 16 years later, the last of the dominions in the British Empire to do so.

This is the official copy of the Statute of Westminster Adoption Act (Public Act No. 38 in the 1947 Statutes of New Zealand). It is an assented act, a bill which has become an Act of Parliament and part of the laws of New Zealand.

In 2005, King Kong, a remake of the classic 1933 film of the same name about a fictional giant ape who climbs New York City’s Empire State Building, opens in theaters.

Directed by Peter Jackson (the filmmaker behind the multiple Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy), the 2005 King Kong remake starred Naomi Watts, Adrien Brody and Jack Black. The film was a box-office success and won three Academy Awards, for Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects.
