Anyone here like Ron Paul? Why do Europeans like Obama? Do they like Obama?

I like Ron Paul in the sense that at least he's honest. I disagree with almost every single one of his policies, but when he speaks it's not usual politician talk, it's genuine, and he's not afraid of any third rails - he's even happy to legalise drugs, which for a Republican is a MASSIVE third rail!

In Europe Obama is quite popular. To be honest, after 8 years of Bush, most Europeans would have been happy with a stuffed toy, doing nothing for 4 years would be infinitely preferable to more Bush!

Being less flippantly though, Obama is popular in Europe because he's intelligent, less extreme right (though still well right of centre for Europe), and because he's not a religious extremist. Europeans generally see a line between politics and religion, and are just as worried about Christian extremists in the US as we are about Islamic extremists in Iran.

Bush with his swagger and arrogance came across as a religiously driven moron with a really big army and a big red nuclear button. That scared the pants off us! Obama, what ever else he may be, at least seems to be competent, educated, and thoughtful. In every way the inverse of Bush, who was almost universally hated here.

I'm not sure we love Obama so much as we're just delighted Bush is gone. Perry scares the pants off us here because he looks JUST like Bush.

ritsuka stated--No, I don't think you should vote for Obama again, unless you really support endless war and right wing economics.

in case you have forgotten it was bush and his 8 yrs of presidency that began this ridiculous war-- over there--it was him that went over there saying sadam hussien had nuclear weapons which turned out they never-- then its been bush milking the economy for all its worth--do you realize while he was in office the price of gas never hardly went down--because his family is into gas and oil stocks so heavy he got rich off the economy going broke--

looking at possible candidates the keep saying could be next up for election and all--so far i plan on voting for obama--what we need is another bill clinton in office but what obama is dealing with right now is the fact he is stuck cleaning up bushs mess --the unemployment rate isnt obamas fault but maybe the first four yrs he will get some of bushes mess cleaned up and next 4 yrs get this country going back in a direction it needs to go----

companies across the country closed up shop using the economy as an excuse--before alot of these companies closed up their doors--they would post how much of a profit they had that year and previous yrs--then close doors thinking that they couldnt afford to loose any money but cant sit here and wonder if they were thinking what it would do to the economy--they didnt care--they got their millions kept their millions and sitting on their millions while the country suffers

lets look at this way--obama democrat and his opponent wil be a republican --republicans have done nothing but prove that lets tax the poor that barely living paycheck to paycheck to death--give tax credits and tax breaks to the rich--after all if it werent for the rich then the people with the paycheck to paycheck living wouldnt have a job to live on-- you see these rich people acting like they never realized they werent paying as much taxes as a person making 40,000 or less a year is bullshit--they know they arent paying as much taxes as lower incomed people its just a ruse to get people sturred up-- come up with a basic tax people owe straight off the top- put it in an high interest account for the tax yr then give out so much in tax refunds-- that way the people with bigger incomes will get majority of their money back plus their money helped acrue interest to p ut back in the economy--

but yes if obama runs i will vote for him again--yes i voted for him the first time no more republican bullshit

Here's a good article which explains Obama's amazing acheivements in world peace and how democratic apologetics have destroyed the anti-war movement via their decision that the only executive to be held responsible for their actions resides on the other side of the aisle.

After campaigning as the candidate of change, the man awarded a Nobel Prize for peace has given the world nothing but more war. Yet despite Barack Obama’s continuation ? nay, escalation ? of the worst aspects of George W. Bush’s foreign policy, including his very own illegal war in Libya, you’d be hard-pressed to find the large-scale protests and outrage from the liberal establishment that characterized his predecessor’s reign (and only seems to pop up when a Republican’s the one dropping the bombs).

That’s not for a lack of things to protest. Since taking office, Obama has doubled the number of troops in Afghanistan and now looks set to break his pledge to begin a significant withdrawal in July. He has unilaterally committed the nation to an unapologetically illegal war in Libya and in two years has authorized more drone strikes in Pakistan than his predecessor authorized in two terms, with one in three of their victims reportedly civilians. In Yemen, he has targeted a U.S. citizen for assassination and approved a cluster bomb strike that, according to Amnesty International, killed 35 innocent women and children.

But these war crimes, which ought to shock the consciences of the president’s liberal supporters, haven’t spurred the sort of popular protest we witnessed under Bush the Lesser. At a recent congressional hearing on the bloated war budget, a handful of CODEPINK activists were the sole dissenters. Thousands poured into the streets to cheer Osama bin Laden’s death, but no Americans were in the streets decrying the drone attack that killed dozens of Pakistani civilians weeks earlier...

Tjerk12 made some good points. Those are almost the same questions I asked my parents before I voted the first time. They always encouraged us to read newspapers, magazines, books, watch or listen to news programs -- in short: seek knowledge, ask questions and learn to think critically. Before the election, they made sure I or they got as much information about candidates and issues as was possible. Their advice after consuming a lot of confusing information was "inform yourself as much as possible and vote your conscience."

In the presidential election of 2008, I cast a write-in vote for Hillary Clinton. She is intelligent, she ran a good campaign and I thought she had the most experience that I could rely upon. (Notice, I did not say trust. I really don't think politicians are trustworthy, in general.) I want to start a "DRAFT HILLARY" movement for 2012!

so it really looks as though you are intent on spreading someone's specific philosophy, just not the truth. I watched this forum kick another freak in the ass for the same stuff. that Behr guy only had some weird right-wing crud to spread around and kept doing that over and over. looks like you are the same kind of dude. nobody is perfect, not if they're human. Obama is doing what he can, while fighting the internal battle of a demo prez with a majority repub congress and senate. if you can do better, I want to see your specific plan, not copied from other political commentator or website, just your ideas based in the reality of what the USA can do to fix all the probs we face. remember, a reality check not some fantasy stuff. anyone can copy and paste and rewrite other peoples stuff, and that's all that your doing, just parroting someone elses opinions.

rituka - elections are about choosing the best of a bad lot, you look at all the candidates and you vote for the one you think will do the most good and the least harm. You can't vote for a perfect person because no such person exists. The question is not "is Obama perfect", but "is Obama better than [insert republican nominee here]".

Should the Republican nominee be Rick Perry I think that for the gay community, the answer will be easy - "yes". Should it be Mitt Romney, I think there's be more to think about, depending on which Mitt Romney it is, the progressive governor of Massachusetts, or the right-wing panderer we've seen in the primary campaign thus far. It would also be a much more interesting question if it were Huntsman or Cain, but I really think it's a battle between Romney and Perry TBH.

I live in Illinois and voted for Obama twice, in the primary and general election for senator. I voted for Cynthia McKinney for President and now mostly vote for Green Party candidates. The Democratic party needs to do a lot more to distinguish themselves from the other party that courts the tea party scumbags cheering for death. Obama couldn't completely turn around the mess left by W, but he should have at least used it as an opportunity to do something different rather than bail out the wealthy. Most liberals don't criticize Obama much, and that's disappointing for those of us not interested in all the wars and war profiteering.
