REBEL RIDGE (2024)

A former Marine grapples his way through a web of small-town corruption when an attempt to post bail for his cousin escalates into a violent standoff with the local police chief. Imdb

Starts of fine then the intensity really ramps up. Great cast and script. Loved it. Recommended

Regan, It's a slow burn movie but actually really good. I'm also surprised as much as I remembered since I was 10yrs old when he left office. Might've things that I learned about later in life on tv. But still a very good movie and Dennis Quaid did a nice job emulating him.

SATURDAY NIGHT (2024)

At 11:30pm on October 11th, 1975, a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television forever. Find out what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live. Imdb

I'm a fan of SNL so was intrugued by this movie about the origins. It is a bit of a mess as the style is a "fly-on-the-wall" docu mentary with mainly hand held cameras. The hours leading up to transmission of the first show were chaotic and that certainly comes across in the movie.

CONSEQUENCES (2018)

Slovenian movie - After being sent to a youth detention centre, 18-year-old Andrej has to fight for his place within the group of inmates while getting closer to Zeljko, their informal leader, and struggling to keep his repressed secret in the dark. Imdb

Given that this is set around a juvenile detention centre this is a bleak affair where bullying and raging hormones collide. I had a bit of a problem watching it as the subtitles (the movie is in Slovenian) were out of sync with the visuals but I managed to follow the plot ok. There are a couple of gay scenes but it's not a coming-of-age or fully gay-themed movie. It is always difficult to assess an actors performance when it is a foreign language movie but the young actors did a good job .... good looking Slovenian youths getting it on together - who would have expected that????? 😉😉😉

MEGALOPOLIS (2024)

The city of New Rome faces the duel between Cesar Catilina, a brilliant artist in favor of an Utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklyn Cicero. Between them is Julia Cicero, with her loyalty divided between her father and her beloved. Imdb

Dull, pretentious, dull; unwatchable; dull; indulgent, dull; bloated, dull, should be renamed MegaFLOPolis. Avoid - did I mention how utterly unwatchable and dull it is?

WHAT WE FIND ON THE ROAD (2024)

On his 18th birthday, TJ receives a key from his estranged ex con father. The key unlocks a timeworn '68 convertible and a challenge to drive across America - in hopes of repairing his sense of family. Supported by a band of lovable oddballs and held together by humor and grit, TJ discovers that sometimes the longest road is the fastest way to home. Imdb

What we find on the road is that not much happens. The trailer makes it look more interesting than it is.

If kids watch this it would be less that 10 mins in before they start repeatedly asking "Are we there yet?"

THE BEAUTIFUL GAME (2024) ... no trailer due to actor ages

Led by their coach Mal (Bill Nighy), the film follows the soccer team as they travel from London to Rome for the Homeless World Cup. At the last minute they decide to bring with them talented striker Vinny (Micheal Ward), but he must confront his own issues and once-promising past in order to help the team and move on with his own life. Imdb

So my plan was to watch CHAOS WALKING starring Tom Holland; Mads Mikkelson & Nick Jonas but when I hit the play button I immediately realised that I had d/loaded a "dubbed into Russian" version from those naughty torrent sites so had to re-think. What was I going to do to recover this terrible situation? I instantly thought "The only thing that is guaranteed to re-balance all of this negative shite is a Bill Nighy movie" and as it turned out I had this unwatched B. Nighy movie on the USB.

Was it good? NO - it was 'king excellent. A heartwarming; feelgood movie but with lots of laugh out loud moments. Recommended

During the movie there were a few "What have I seen him in? moments .... to which the answers were a) He's the welsh lad in It's A Sin b) He starred opposite Olivia Coleman in Empire of Light and c) He was the psychotic gangland leader in the fecking excellent Irish Tv series Love/Hate

Last night I watched, Jules. And it's about an older man who's starting to get dementia helping an alien who's crash landed in his house and get helps from 2 older woman/friends. It's such an enjoyable and cute movie.
I agree, we watched it a couple of weeks ago and it was delightful,

AKRON (2015)

Benny, a college freshman at the University of Akron, Ohio meets and falls for fellow freshman Christopher at a football game. With the support of their families and friends they embark on a new relationship. But a tragic event in the past soon comes to light and threatens to tear them apart. Akron is a moving family drama and a sensitive young adult love story of two young men falling in love in the Midwest and their will to overcome the most painful of truths. Imdb

It gets a little too melodramatic at times but I enjoyed this. It's not a coming-of-age movie and not even a gay-themed movie really. Yes the 2 main characters are gay but interestingly if you swapped them for a hetrosexual couple you probably wouldn't need to change much plot or dialogue.

CONCRETE UTOPIA (2023 - South-Korea)

While no one knows for sure how far the ruins stretch, or what the cause of the earthquake may be, in the heart of Seoul there is only one apartment building left standing. It is called Hwang Gung Apartments. As time passes, outsiders start coming in to Hwang Gung Apartments trying to escape the extreme cold. Before long, the apartment residents are unable to cope with the increasing numbers. Feeling a threat to their very survival, the residents enact a special measure. (IMDb)

A dystopian disaster movie. Perhaps a movie not for everyone. But it shows how people will react in times of anguish and despair - and that is the real horror! Neighbours - yesterday good friends and today beasts!

I watched this a while back and agree, it's an interesting movie looking at how society can fall apart

edit: I just went back to see what I had written about it in April:

"I was pointed to this Korean post apocalyptic-disaster movie as it stars Lee Byung-Hun. It is a well filmed and well acted study into how human nature is affected by cataclysmic events and focuses on the aftermath. Lord Of The Flies meets Eathquake."

CHAOS WALKING (2021)

Two unlikely companions embark on a perilous adventure through the badlands of an unexplored planet as they try to escape a dangerous and disorienting reality where all thoughts are seen and heard by everyone. Imdb

I've been suffering this week from a stinking cold with the usual cough; sore throat; fever & sneezing and going to bed early so no films but last night I thought I'd stay up long enough for a movie. I tried to watch this about a week ago but discovered the copy I had grabbed was dubbed into an eastern european language so had t get hold of another copy. Maybe I should have taken the problem with the first one as an omen and given up, It stars Tom Holland; Daisy Ridley; Mads Mikkelson & Nick Jonas but they cannot save this and make it worth watching. On the plus side I got to see a part of a movie but still got to bed early

Last weekend we watched two movies:

1. BLITZ (2024 - England)

The stories of a group of Londoners during the German bombing campaign of the British capital during World War II. (IMDb)

This is a heartwarming and heartbreaking movie . The horrible war through the eyes of a 9 year old boy. This is a very recommended movie especially in a time like today where a new war is nothing what is impossible!!!!! My advice is: watch it if you have the possibility!

2. JOY (2024 - England)

Spanning from 1968 to 1978, the film will follow three trailblazers facing opposition from the church, state, media and medical establishment, in their pursuit of the world's first 'test tube baby', Louise Joy Brown. The three figures are a young nurse, a visionary scientist and an innovative surgeon, played by Thomasin McKenzie, James Norton and Bill Nighy respectively. (IMDb)

This too is a great film which you MUST watch (you'll find it on Netflix). It is thrilling like a crime story how these three scientists have had to fight against the church and the "vox populi". It happened only 56 years before and it seems that these years have been in the "dark age". Very recommended as well to every one who is interested in these things.

This evening:
DOMINIQUE (2024 - USA)

Dominique, a well-trained assassin, flees from her troubled past in an attempt to begin a new life in South America. However, when she crashes her plane in Colombia, she soon finds herself in a town plagued with violence and corruption. Facing brutal attacks from the police and mafia, Dominique must decide whether to protect herself or an innocent family that has taken her in.
(IMDb)

This was an awesome action stunner from the first scene until the last picture of the film. This time the "hero" is a "heroine". A killer machine from the Ukraine (!!!!!!!). There is a whole army of corrupt Colombian police officers -- and ONE WOMAN. And now you must guess who was killed? You are right: our heroine is killing the whole army with only a small scar!! But nonetheless - that is pure action cinema and we liked it! Try it!
