SALTBURN (2023)

Struggling to find his place at Oxford University, student Oliver Quick finds himself drawn into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton, who invites him to Saltburn, his eccentric family's sprawling estate, for a summer never to be forgotten.
(IMDb)

A very controversial discussed film, with a great twist! You may like or hate this movie and there are many things to hate it - but nonetheless why not watch such a controversial film. Try it. I would be very interested what have been your opinions!

Happy Christmas
Just finished watching Saltburn.
Three of the scenes made me say OMG and WTF. LOVED the dance scene.

FAIR HAVEN (2016)

A young man returns to his family farm, after a long stay in ex-gay conversion therapy, and is torn between the expectations of his emotionally distant father, and the memories of a past, loving relationship he has tried to bury. Imdb

I thought it was slow and dull.

JUROR No.2 (2024)

No trailer due to spoiler

While serving as a juror in a high-profile murder trial, a family man finds himself struggling with a serious moral dilemma, one he could use to sway the jury verdict and potentially convict or free the wrong killer. Imdb

Directed by Clint Eastwood and stars Nicholas Hoult; JK Simmons; Toni Collette & Kiefer Sutherland. The critics and lots of audiences loved it ... I gave up at around the 40min mark, just as the jurors started deliberating.

BORDERLANDS (2024)

An infamous bounty hunter returns to her childhood home, the chaotic planet Pandora, and forms an unlikely alliance with a team of misfits to find the missing daughter of the most powerful man in the universe. Imdb

So this Kate Blanchett; Kevin Hart movie is based on a video game. Jamie Lee Curtis is in this Is she any good? Probably but I never got far enough to find out. I hope the video game is good....the movie is crap. It has a very annoying robot - the equivalent of Ja Ja Binks.

ALLELUJAH (2022)

A warm and deeply moving story about old age. When the geriatric ward in a small Yorkshire hospital is threatened with closure, the hospital decides to fight back by galvanizing the local community: they invite a news crew to film their preparations for a concert in honour of the hospital's most distinguished nurse. What could go wrong? The movie celebrates the spirit of the elderly patients whilst paying tribute to the deep humanity of the medical staff battling with limited resources and ever-growing demand. Imdb

An odd one to talk about. It's in places poignant; heartwarming and funny as you would expect as it's from the pen of Alan Bennett. For the most part rather than a plot from start to finish it flits between the patients and staff almost in a doc.umentary style - then ends with a surprise. Apparently the Alan Bennett play it is based on was called a "Love letter to the NHS" and I can see why. As to the cast, Jennifer Saunders; Bally Gill; Judi Dench; Russell Tovey; Derek Jacobi are all excellent but it's a bit of a mess as it can't seem to decide if it wants to be heartwarming; dark or make political arguments.

Not sure how dark this movie gets, but here in America, we could use a "heartwarming and funny" movie about the healthcare system right about now.:ninja:

VENOM THE LAST DANCE (2024)

Eddie Brock and Venom must make a devastating decision as they're pursued by a mysterious military man and alien monsters from Venom's home world. Imdb

So the finale of the series, and there's a lot going on maybe too many storylines but the comedy is still there, especially the banter between Eddy and Venom and there's lots of high octane action; a very ugly critter from Venom's home world and a funny Tom Cruise reference.

Dumb but lots of fun.

GLADIATOR II (2024)

After his home is conquered by the tyrannical emperors who now lead Rome, Lucius is forced to enter the Colosseum and must look to his past to find strength to return the glory of Rome to its people. Imdb

You remember the original? with gladiators; colluseum; corrupt emperors; scheming senators - well this is pt 2 and Paul Mescal takes over from Russel Crowe. Differences? - have we seen it all before ? Well yes but there are colluseum naval re-enactments; mutant baboons and Denzil Washington - who is by far the best thing in this movie. Goes well with a Chateauneuf Du Pape and too many mince pies ;)

edit: Is it as good as the first one? No, No way - It might have the budget but it doesn't have the heart

DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE (2024)

Deadpool is offered a place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by the Time Variance Authority, but instead recruits a variant of Wolverine to save his universe from extinction. Imdb

2hrs 8mins of in-jokes and guest appearances but that's not enough. Plot? it was a convoluted confusing mess - at around 40mins in it turns into a 2nd rate Mad Max Fury Road. There are a few laughs but at 2hrs 8mins it's too long..... maybe 2hrs 8mins too long. Rubbish and very dissappointing

On the plus side that's 2.4Gb storage I get back once I have deleted it.

THE SIX TRIPLE EIGHT (2024 - USA)
During the height of the conflict in World War II circa 1943, difficulties in the war led to a change in priorities, and much of the mail previously reaching soldiers on the front lines has been halted. As warehouses begin to overflow with unfulfilled deliveries, soldiers' hopes are dashed as they lose contact with their families back home. To fix this problem, the 6888th Battalion the Women's Army Corps' all-Black battalion including over 800 female soldiers is sent to tackle the impossible challenge of sorting years' worth of backlogged mail. Even as military higher-ups hope to see the plan fail, the Six Triple Eight are determined to deliver hope to soldiers and families across the world. (IMdB)

This was a very emotional film about black women who fixed a problem in 60 days what couldn't have fixed before in 3 years!
But honored they would only in 2022 by President Biden - only 4 of these women have lived to that time. But better late than never! Very recommended!

HOSTAGE (2005 - USA)
Jeff Talley, a former LAPD hostage negotiator, has moved himself away from his failed career outside of Los Angeles, and away from his wife and daughter when three perpetrators move in on an unsuspecting family. But the family's father has a secret which might compromise his kin, and one of the criminals is about to jump over the edge. Jeff Talley has to get everybody to survive the night......if he can. (IMdB)

This was a really superb and very exciting movie with the "old" Bruce Willis (I mean before his illness). Recommended if you like excellent action thrillers!!!!!

RED ONE (2024)

After Santa Claus is kidnapped, the North Pole's Head of Security must team up with a notorious hacker in a globe-trotting, action-packed mission to save Christmas. Imdb

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson; Lucy Lui; Chris Evans and J.K.Simmons star in this "dumb but lots of fun" xmas themed movie. It walks a tricky line between being a movie for kids and an adults action movie.

ABSOLUTION (2024) .... No trailer due to actor age

An aging gangster attempts to reconnect with his children and rectify the mistakes in his past, but the criminal underworld won't loosen their grip willingly. Imdb

Lian Neeson stars. Sooo slooow - I switched off at around 30 mins. Maybe all those involved should seek absolution for inflicting this on people.

THE BEST OF ENEMIES (2019 - USA)

Civil rights activist Ann Atwater faces off against C.P. Ellis, Exalted Cyclops of the Ku Klux Klan, in 1971 Durham, North Carolina over the issue of school integration. (IMdB)

A deeply interesting Bio-Pic about the start of the Civil Rights Movement in 1971. Recommended!

ARCADIAN (2024)

A father and his twin teenage sons fight to survive in a remote farmhouse at the end of the world. Imdb

Checking the USB I see that I have 3 monster movies to watch. This one is a post-apocalyptic setting where the creatures are Big-Foot meets Werewolf who only come out at night. Nicholas cage stars. I got bored

THE HOLDOVERS (2023)

A curmudgeonly instructor at a New England school remains on campus during Christmas break. He soon forms an unlikely bond with a brainy but damaged troublemaker, and with the school's cook, a woman who just lost a son in the Vietnam War. Imdb

I was going to watch this again over Xmas but never got around to it and had planned to watch it last night but it got too late so I watched THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL instead but tonight I had the time for this wonderful, sentimental, funny, heartwarming and beautifully bittersweet movie. I loved it when I first saw it last Xmas/New Year and it didn't dissappoint on the 2nd viewing either.

If you haven't seen it it's recommended

Since it's streaming, I finally saw Wicked to see why my Bluesky and X/Twitter feeds are full of praises and people watching it over and over.
Overall, I thought it was a really good movie, and really enjoyed the Defying Gravity scene, but can't see myself wanting to watch it again anytime soon. So, hopefully that doesn't mean I have to turn in my gay card. Bwahaha!
