This time in the last cycle I would still have answered that I would be happy with McCain as President, but then, later in the campaign he started to reverse himself on all the things he was 'mavericky' on, and then he cemented his race to the right, and displayed unforgivable bad judgement, by picking Palin as his running mate. I was already getting a bit concerned about McCain before, but the moment that Katie Couric (sp?) interview aired, I knew I could never feel comfortable with the man who picked her to be a heart-beat from the presidency as president.
This time around - Backman and Santorm are scary fanatic Christians, Perry is a scary scary killer, Ron Paul is great on foreign policy, but far too extreme on the national stuff, Cain is a bafoon who's proven time and again that he's utterly clueless about the world around him, and probably a womaniser too, and Romney has flip-flopped so often I don't believe a word that comes out of his mouth! I quite liked the Mitt Romney who was for healthcare reform as governor, but this new one is not so nice!
A good President needs to be:
1) intelligent
2) well educated
3) able to tell the difference between good advice and bad advice
4) able to take good advice
5) a good negotiator
6) pragmatic enough to compromise in order to actually get things done
7) honest
8) compassionate
9) rational
10) Principled
I'm as disappointed as anyone about how little Obama was able to get done, but I still think he fits all of those 10 criteria, with the exception of Romney, the other republican candidates all fail are point one or two, and Romney definitely fails at 10, and possibly at 7 and 9 too.
