Not an American, but it seems to me that Obama will pursue exactly the same policies than those Republican jackasses, but unlike them, he will "sugar-coat" them with beautiful and progressive speeches LOL

It's very fair to say that the American Left is a long way right of the European Left, so that even when a Democrat gets in elected in the States, the US remains right wing.

However, that does not mean that the two parties are the same. The Dems are right wing, the Republians even further to the right. Obama will protect the moneyed interests just like a Republican would, I think anyone elected in the US to become corrupted like that to actually get elected, but I can't see Obama invading Iran, like the Republicans are dead keen to do. Obama did bring home the troops from Iraq, over massive Republican revulsion. I can't see Republicans abolishing DATD, but Obama did. I can't see Republicans doing any financial reform other than removing more regulation, but Obama set up the Consumer Protection Agency, and got Dod-Frank through. He also passed imperfect health reform, which Republicans would not have done. He also managed to pass the (too small) stimulus, that probably saved America from a depression, and just left a recession.

American and the world would have been very different if there had been a Republican in office for the last three years, and the same will be true for the four years starting in January 2013, depending on who the American people choose to elect. Elections have consequences, and all politicians may have similarities, but they are not all the same.

B.

American businesses spent $2 billion, last year, to comply with federal regulations.

The American economy is 14.5 trillion dollars in size. A mere 1 percent regulatory cost would be 145 billion. 2 billion in this economy is almost a rounding error.

Regulation exists to provide safety, predictability, and standardization. Regulation creates a fair level playing field on which businesses operate. Much of the regulatory law governing business exists for the purpose of making the doing of business fair and predictable. In other words FOR business. My guess would be that there would be few entrepreneurs willing to newly wade into the business world if it had no predictable regulatory framework.

Believing that the market will effectively regulate itself is beyond wishful thinking. It's pure fantasy. The fervent, even religious, commitment of the right to at least severely curtailing regulation is one of the many reasons that no matter how unimpressed I may be by the current democratic political performance I cannot vote for anyone further to the right. I will as I said earlier in the thread vote for Obama again even though I don't think he necessarily deserves my vote.

Jakes2,
I'm a little more sympathetic towards Obama than you are and plan on voting for him again. The economic circumstances in this country aren't his fault, this problem began before he was elected and he had to deal with it. Those that caused the problems, the Republicans, have been largely been able to avoid responsibility for the problem. In addition, the American people blamed Obama for the problems and elected Republicans to the house which made it even more difficult to deal with these problems. A divided Congress is a bad idea when you are trying to get something accomplished.
I agree with your comments on the market system, we don't really have a free market system and one of the problems is that once markets get this large, as ours is, money becomes a big component and those with money are freer than those without money. We need regulations that will allow the little guy to be heard.

Yesterday, I just watched "One last thing". It is great especially the actor, Michael Angarano. He's cute.
