Honestly it doesn't matter who you vote for or who is elected, the country will continue to go downhill regardless.

That kind of apathy is a self-fulfilling prophesy, one that politicians feed off. The less people educate themselves, and the more people are apathetic, the more corrupt politicians can get away with being, so the more corrupt they become.

Democracy is a duty, not a privilege, you HAVE to make your vote count by staying informed, and then voting intelligently for the candidate you like most or hate least.

I vote on local elections, things that directly effect my area, but at the highest levels of government I honestly believe that our votes aren't even counted, the outcome of the "elections" are decided long in advance IMO.

Again - that's exactly the attitude that makes that outcome possible.

As Winston Churchill put it: "Democracy is a system that ensures we are governed no better than we deserve".

What percentage of US voters actually vote? How well is the US federal government doing at running the country? Coincidence? Doubt it!

As for local government, why does that work better? Because people have yet to become as apathetic about it.

I think every citizen of every nation has a duty to follow how their representatives vote, and to express their displeasure when those votes go against your wishes. Finally, when you feel strongly about something, you should let your elected representatives know about it.

If we want to get more out of democracy, then we need to put more in, no such thing as a free lunch unfortunately.

I'd say that 100% of voters vote, or did you mean people that are eligible to vote but don't? No politician is ever going to bring about any real long term change in this country. The only thing that would bring about real change would be another revolution, and I don't see that happening any time soon, and even if it did the government we ended up with would likely be just as bad or worse than the one we have right now. IMO the whole election system is just a sham to fool the people into thinking they actually have power over the way the country is ran, It doesn't matter if it's Barack Obama or Rick Perry or anyone in between that ends up in the white house. People have this idea that the president can just do whatever he wants and pass any laws and regulations that they want because they're president, but that's not the way it works, anything that the president wants to do has to be approved by a lot of people before it can be put into action, and no radical changes are going to be approved. The only real power the president has is veto power really.

By voters I meant all the people on the electoral register, i.e., everyone who can cast a ballot. Turnout is the percentage of those who can vote who bother to do so, and the lower it is, the worse your politicians will behave, and the more they'll be indebted to special interests.

No politician is ever going to bring about any real long term change in this country. You've hit the nail on the head here, but not for the reasons you think. It's up to the ELECTORATE to get their ass in gear and get engaged, if you're going to just sit around waiting for a magical politician to just show up and wave a magic wand then of course it'll never happen! You do indeed need a revolution, but not one with guns and bloodshed, but one where people start to USE the rights they have in America. Americans are not oppressed, they are apathetic. They don't need to be freed, they need to be inspired!

IMO the whole election system is just a sham to fool the people into thinking they actually have power over the way the country is ran, It doesn't matter if it's Barack Obama or Rick Perry or anyone in between that ends up in the white house. That is ONLY the way it works because the electorate let it be the way it works! If representatives and senators are not held accountable, they will do what ever the fuck they want. They won't pay a blind bit of notice to the electorate unless the electorate make them. The lobbyists are not apathetic, but the people are, so the lobbyist get their way, and the people don't!

Americans have freedom of speech and free elections, those are the raw materials from which a good government can be built, IF, and ONLY IF, the people bother their ass. Americans do not, and hence, they have a shitty government. It's not the politicians who are asleep at the wheel, it's the people!
