Well it's a Gerard Butler movie so that tells you a lot but the thing is the silly plot ones like Olympus Has Fallen;. Den Of Thieves; London Has Fallen are a reasonably entertaining way to kill 90 mins or more but this pile of poo was just terrible. The advertising trailer should have had a voice-over something like "They picked the wrong mild mannered property developer when they decided to kidnap his wife and hold her for ransom (at the local gang bosses drug factory/meth lab out in the forest). ... when a man gets angry he get's ANGRY!!!"

I nearly watched either Greenland or Hunter Killer tonight instead (both G Butler movies) hopefully when I do they will turn out to be better than this - be hard to be worse.

Superman (1978) - I haven't seen this in a while and I got it on 4K HD. This is a very satisfying movie. And it takes me back to being in my 20s and swooning over Christopher Reeve. Take a look at this short clip - when you see Margot Kidder, that was me on the inside. (Also, Christopher Reeve was a far better actor than this movie deserved.)

A 2022 Sam Mendes film: EMPIRE OF LIGHT
For us a wonderful, a very emotional amazing film about the interpersonal relationship between two lonesome souls.
Hilary (Olivia Colman) is a cinema manager struggling with her mental health, and Stephen (Micheal Ward) is a new employee longing to escape the provincial town where he faces daily adversity. Together they find a sense of belonging and experience the healing power of music, cinema, and community.
Very recommended to all who love good cinema and stories which are coming from the heart to soul.

Glad to read that you liked it as I have it lined up and will be watching it maybe this week or next. With this from Sam Mendes and Spielberg making The Fableman it looks like writer-directors spent lockdown pondering their industry and using it for ideas.

Tonight's viewing has been The Outpost. I happened on this via Caleb Landry Jones who was in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri (he rented them out - and later got thrown through the window) and he's in this, alongside Scott Eastwood (son of Clint) and Orlando Bloom. It tells the true story of the young soldiers stationed at a remote forward outpost in Afghanistan. The outpost is in a deep valley formed of 3 mountains and difficult to depend. Why the heck anyone thought it was a good place to put it is beyond me. What ensued is apparently known as The Battle of Kamdesh and the bloodiest American engagement of the Afghanistan War in 2009, and Bravo Troop 3-61 CAV became one of the most decorated units of the 19-year conflict.

As a war film it is better than the average. It puts the danger, risks and pointlessness full-on onscreen in brutal and realistic detail

Strewth... an Ozzie crime drama ya' say?

Following the death of his mother, J finds himself living with his estranged family, under the watchful eye of his doting grandmother, Smurf, mother to the Cody boys. J quickly comes to believe that he is a player in this world. But, as he soon discovers, this world is far larger and more menacing than he could ever imagine. When tensions between family and police reach a bloody peak, J finds himself at the center of a cold-blooded revenge plot that turns the family upside down, and which also threatens to ensnare innocent bystanders. One senior cop, Nathan Leckie , must lure J into the police fold and then shepherd him through a complex minefield of witness protection, corrupt cops, slippery lawyers and a paranoid and vengeful underworld. J comes to realize that in order to survive he must determine how the game is played - he must somehow choose his place in this cunning and brutal animal kingdom Guy Pearce; Ben Mendelson; Jacki Weaver & James Frechville star

Where to start? Well in essence the plot is about a recovering addict called Utah who is brought to Los Angeles for treatment, but soon learns that the rehab center is not about helping people, but a cover for a multi-billion-dollar fraud operation that enlists addicts to recruit other addicts. The movie tries to juggle on one hand a dramatic tense drama and on the other a serious social message - check the trailer for how they present the data using $$ graphics; a voiceover and newspaper headlines and although it is a very strong message i.m.ho. it doesn't pull it off and the result is a bit of a mess. So worthy but a bit of a failure - stars Frank Grillo; Kenneth Michael Williams; Melissa Leo and (following one of yesterdays movies starring Clint Eastwood's son Sean) Utah is played by Jack Kilmer, son of Val

A dark tale of two lighthouse keepers trapped and isolated who get stir-crazy cabin fever.....

Once again I have tried to watch this and have been beaten. It has excellent performances from Robert Patterson & William Defoe and the great grainy monotone cinematography and an atmospheric sound-design enhance the foreboding feel but I find it too dark; too claustrophobic; too intense and again had to give in and hit the OFF button .... maybe one day I will be in the right mood to "get" what others who consider this a masterpiece "get"

A dark comedy from 2011 starring Brendan Gleeson and set in the wilds of Ireland - no, not THAT one. In this one an unorthodox Irish policeman (Brendan Gleeson) with a confrontational personality is partnered with an uptight F.B.I. agent (Don Cheadle) to investigate an international drug-smuggling ring. Mark Strong also stars. All the main cast are on form, and the performances and the witty script combine to an over the top enjoyable and unlikely buddy-cop movie

Writen & directed by John Michael McDonagh, Yeah maybe the name's familiar - he's the older brother of Martin McDonagh (In Bruges; 7 Psychopaths; Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouiri and THAT one)

Again an extraordinary and sensitive film from France (2021) TENOR
I think a must see!!!!! Very recommended.
Antoine, a young Parisian suburbanite, studies accounting without much conviction, dividing his time between the rap battles he practices with talent and his job as a sushi delivery boy. During an errand at the Garnier Opera, his path crosses that of Mrs LOYSEAU, a singing teacher in the venerable institution, who detects in Antoine a raw talent to be developed. Despite his lack of operatic culture, Antoine is fascinated by this form of expression and is convinced to follow Mrs Loyseau's teaching. Antoine has no choice but to lie to his family, his friends and the whole city, for whom opera is a bourgeois thing, far from their world.

I think the French movie-makers are the very best in realizing emotional feelings into strong pictures!

War Of The Worlds....

The Spielberg season continues with this 90min extra-terrestial monster invasion movie. Tom Cruise has to protect his son & daughter (hence no YTube clip). Kind of been here before but this time the relentless seemingly unstoppable thing is metal - not a big shark, even so it's still a tense but entertaining way to spend a Saturday afternoon with a bowl of popcorn, even if the later section with Tim Robbins in the cellar/basement goes on for too long.

I agree with all Shelter has said - a wonderful movie. Saying that the performances of Olivia Coleman; Toby Jones & Colin Firth are excellent is like saying "The sun will rise in the morning" but they are great (although Jones & Firth don't have much to do) Coleman particularly is really on top form, as are other cast members such as Micheal Ward who is superb. Perfect atmospheric soundtrack from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross who did the same for the wonderful Bones And All. So a Sam Mendes (1917; Skyfall; American Beauty; Road To Perdition) movie, with cinematography by the genius Roger Deakins (Skyfall; 1917; Fargo; No Country For Old Men etc etc) so what is not to love???...

So another Spielberg... and a damn fine one! Beautifully shot, with a superb cast and script and from the jaw-dropping opening 30 mins to the final scene this gripping movie just batters the senses with the sheer horror and pointlessness of it all.
