Ahhh the male bonding; the top notch cast; those wisecracks; the awesome on-screen aerial dog-fights; the quotable lines; the heartbreaking moments; the soundtrack etc etc - they don't make 'em like this anymore.....

In a coincidence, I just watched the original TG night before last. I wanted to check it out with my new sound system. You know what I never noticed before? Tim Robbins is in it. Right at the end, he is the pilot that replaces Goose flying with Maverick when they go after the real Russians. He must have had to go through all that flight training just for 60 seconds of screen time.

So after making the excellent "In Bruges" but before going on to make the also excellent "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri" and then the very excellent "The Banshees Of Inisherin" Martin MacDonagh made this dark screwball comedy. Compared to his other movies I rank this in 4th place, but coming last to those doesn't necessarily mean much given the strength of the competition. The sassy one-liners are there and the cast are all on form - Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Tom Waits, and Christopher Walken. Not convinced yet? well here's the opening scene

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri

So after a break from Martin McDonagh movies we're back with another excellent movie from the man. I had forgotten just how good this powerful film was. A very good story and played out by a really good cast Frances McDormand; Woody Harrelson; Sam Rockwell are superb in this movie - really great subtle & nuanced performances from all three.

If you haven't seen this it's highly recommended, the trailers either give too much away so here's a clip ...

I'm wondering why it took you so "long" to watch this movie!? :p Glad you liked it! ;)
If it hadn't appeared on the nominations list I wouldn't have know it existed and given what it's about it's really surprising that there wasn't/isn't a bigger "buzz" about it, maybe there is and it just passed me by? I don't know how extensive it's release has been but maybe the muliplex cinemas are wary of showing a movie, even if officially a mainstream/general release movie, covering such themes and in particular 2No. specific moments in the movie (no spoilers here!) might be worrying them

Released in cinemas on 17 June 2022 - one week after Jurassic World: Dominion, one week before Elvis, and on the exact same day as P1xar's Lightyear - it is safe to say that Good Luck To You, Leo Grande was overlooked last year. Besides that the movie NEVER made it to Netf1ix, unfortunately.

I think it is one of 2022's best hidden gem comedies. The movie scored a brilliant 93% on R0tten T0matoes.

I was aware that the Coen Bros. and Wes Anderson like to stick with a "stable" of actors.

Cinematic geniuses the Coen Bros. like to work with the likes of John Turturro; Frances McDormand; Josh Brolin; George Clooney & Tim Blake Nelson in many of their movies. Similarly the great Wes Anderson regularly works with such as Jeff Goldblum; Tilda Swinton; William Defoe; Angelica Huston; Bill Murray & Edward Norton.

But it only struck me this week, following my movie viewing that Martin McDonagh is heading the same way. In Bruges stars Colin Farrell; Brenda Gleeson and both appear in The Banshees of Inisherin with Kerry Condon who also appears in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri. Colin Farrell is also in 7 Psychopaths along with Woody Harrelson & Sam Rockwell who also star in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri. And equalling Colin Farrell's appearances with 3 is Zeljko Ivanek who appears in In Bruges; 7 Psychopaths & Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri.

No YTube clip due to the age of some of the cast but that's irrellevant as I gave up on this about half way through anyway. This got a lot of positive reviews and glowing comments but I just didn't care about the characters at all. I was bored and switched off before the end,

Okay - so cards on the table, I grabbed this'cos Sam Bottomley was in it, and Tim Roth. So it's ticking a couple of boxes but there's a gap sometimes between what is promised and what is delivered and sadly this didn't do it for me. Tim Roth is great but that's not enough to save this.

I just spotted that this is nominated for a BAFTA in Outstanding British Film and Paul Mescal has a Best Actor nomination in both BAFTA and Oscar lists.... maybe the 2nd half was much better?

Smurfs Go Swimming.

Where to start, well it's a feast for the eyes, the state of the art visuals looks fantastic of course, but then we have been here before, about 13 years ago with it's predecessor Avatar (or Avatar 1 as I guess it will now be refered to) sadly i.m.h.o the plot was a bit lame being much of a re-hash of the plot ideas from the 1st one. So the sky people come and attack nice forest living smurfs; smurfs fight back then one smurf family goes to live with swimming smurf-cousins; sky people attack swimming smurfs then swimming smurfs counter attack and so on... but with too many long battles and at times some terribly cliched dialoque. And at 3hrs 12 mins it's just too damn long. Overall although the visuals were superb I found it emotionally hollow, soulless and veering towards dull.

Yesterday: GOOD LUCK TO YOU, LEO GRANDE.
If I hadn't read here so much praising words about this film, I wouldn't have watched it. Two persons - it is like a stage play and for me such a film isn't interesting.
But then here all the chorus of praise --- and we watched it. And now: 97 minutes are gone by and I couldn't believe that it was over. It was awesome, marvellous. Daryl McCormack didn't act: he WAS Leo. That wasn't a simple sex-worker - he was a psychologist.
And Emma Thompson - wow what a daring woman. Her last scene in front of the mirror was more than courageous.
Summarized: It was a great movie event! 👍
