thank you again - will watch it this evening
WOOOO..... I don't want to give away too much about the plot but love blooms between a young woman on the margins of society and a disenfranchised drifter and they embark on a cross country journey through the backroads of middle America - so it's a road movie & it's a love story; and at times (due to a major plot spoiler that I don't want to give away) it's extremely bloody and violent. The performances from the 3 main leads Taylor Russel; Mark Rylance andTimotie ShampooTimothée Chalamet are excellent, Rylance is particularly creepy as Sully. It's beautifully shot and the score features a lot of original music from Trent Renzor & Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails as well as the likes of Joy Division; Kiss; Leonard Cohen & Duran Duran. If you go into this movie without knowing too much about it then it's OMG; WTF? jaw dropping time.
Just to say that I re-watched "1917" a couple of days ago - God allmighty how damn good it is and goddamned how brilliant George MacKay is in this movie!!!
So it had to happen, a George MacKay movie that was a bit of a dissappointment - and not just because George wasn't wearing figure-hugging boxer-briefs. It was okay - but only okay. I suppose once you have seen him in 1917; Captain Fantastic; Wolf; How I Live Now; and Pride (all highly recommended btw) you hope that everything else will be as good. I have a couple more George movies to watch, let's see how they do - one is Sunshine On Leith which I have never really fancied, musicals not usually being my thing and not being a Proclaimers fan either (all the songs are by them - but sung by the cast so might not be too bad! lol) the other is I Came By, which has had mixed reviews.
Yeah he's brilliant - which is just as well as he is on-screen for a good 98% of the movie.Just to say that I re-watched "1917" a couple of days ago - God allmighty how damn good it is and goddamned how brilliant George MacKay is in this movie!!!
i saw that movie years ago--i watched it three times in a row-the one scene with the red cape was all over the room and he stands up walking and pulls it with him was so intense a scene--i almost didnt watch it--- but this was one of those movies that out of a score of 1 to 10 it deserved a 12--Yeah he's brilliant - which is just as well as he is on-screen for a good 98% of the movie.

The Cell
So having mentioned this film a few posts back it prompted me to watch it again this afternoon while the laptop did it's routine major backup. Another reason to watch it in the afternoon is it gives you time to watch another movie in the evening and so clear your head of some of the images before going to bed! You don't want to have the Demon King in your dreams.
On the face of it it's a cops v. serial killer story - so far so "usual". But this is a movie from Tarsem (who made the wonderful "The Fall") so it quickly gets very unusual. FBI agent (Vince Vaughn) has the perpetrator (Vincent D'Onofrio) whose method of operation is to abduct women one at a time and place them in a secret area where they are kept for about forty hours until they are slowly drowned. Unfortunately, he has fallen into an irreversible coma which means he cannot tell the feds where he has taken his latest victim. So the FBI turn to a psychotherapist (Jennifer lopez) who has a revolutionary new treatment which allows her mind to literally enter the mind of her patients and ask her to enter and explore the twisted sub-consious mind of the killer to get the information about the latest victim before time runs out. ...... but the killer's damaged personality poses dangers that threaten to overwhelm her.
Astonishing, and not just because it's a Jennifer Lopez movie that's worth watching. Considering this was Tarsems' debut and made with technology from 23 years ago much of the visual imagery is amazing.
Is is a triumph of style over content? Probably Yes - but Ohh that style, disturbing; visceral, I read one comment "It's as if Salvador Dali had made a crime drama". Here's a trailer to give you a taste......
this movie was ok--i just wished it didnt have the rock as black adam---thats all we need is another movie where he acts all badass----Thank you so much for your warning words. So we will not watch this crap.
The only thing I can say here: I can confirm every word which has been written here. If you haven't watched this film by now - do it at once!
Mmmm, I had not heard of this but I will see if I can track it down.- not many movies with a Depp/Nighy pairing (if you ignore the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise - and I think ignoring them is the best plan!)Just we've seen MINAMATA with Johnny Depp. It's a film from 2020. But if you are searching for a film for light afternoon of evening entertainment - this is the wrong film for you. It is based on true events.
New York, 1971. Following his celebrated days as one of the most revered photojournalists of World War II, W. Eugene Smith (Johnny Depp) has become a recluse, disconnected from society and his career. But a secret commission from Life magazine editor Robert Hayes (Bill Nighy) sends him to the Japanese coastal city of Minamata, which has been ravaged by mercury poisoning; the result of decades of gross industrial negligence by the country's Chisso Corporation. There, Smith immerses himself in the community, doenting their efforts to live with Minamata Disease and their passionate campaign to achieve recognition from Chisso and the Japanese government. Armed with only his trusted camera, Smith's images from the toxic village give the disaster a heartbreaking human dimension, and his initial assignment turns into a life-changing experience. Very recommended!
In my opinion, even Christian Bale can't save a Netf1ix movie. Slow, stagey, and utterly uninvolving!Mmmm, I had not heard of this but I will see if I can track it down.- not many movies with a Depp/Nighy pairing (if you ignore the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise - and I think ignoring them is the best plan!)
You chose better than me. I went for The Pale Blue Eye a "who & why dunnit" set in 1830 at West Point military academy. Beautifully filmed but slow and sorry to say but if I had to use just one word then that word would be dull. I was more interested by the fact that 3 of the main leads, the commandant; doctor & senior officer at West Point are played by Brits - Timothy Spall; Toby Jones and Simom McBurney (Vicar Of Dibley's choir master) they are all great, as are Christian Bale; Robert Duvall and Harry Melling. But I just didn't care about any of them .... so dull that I watched the last 40 mins or so in Fast/Forward
Well, we've had the intention for our next film to watch THE PALE BLUE EYE - but now..........I think we will change our interest to another one.Mmmm, I had not heard of this but I will see if I can track it down.- not many movies with a Depp/Nighy pairing (if you ignore the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise - and I think ignoring them is the best plan!)
