Click on the "paperclip icon" above and then insert the ytube link....

I just watched the trailer - it quotes reviews saying "downright horriffic" and "not for the squeamish" Looks like it could be Red State meets Deliverance .......... maybe I'll try and get a copy.

So before I pressed play I had my doubts about this one as it's from writer/director Alejandro González Iñárritu. His previous movies include The Revenant which was okay but also Babel; Birdland and Biutiful - none of which I liked. And I can add this to the not liked list. Many critics have called it (like they did Babel and Birdland) a cinematic masterpiece etc but I'm with the others who weren't so impressed. Yes it looks great with some innovative and very surreal moments at times but I found it self-indulgent; a classic case of style over content. There was no narrative plot just a jumble of scenes - ok maybe it was "explained" at the end but at 2hrs 37 mins it was too damn long to wait for.

edit:

It just occurred to me Babel; Birdland; Biutiful & Bardo - all I have to do is ignore all of his movies starting with a B ;);)

Extraction (2020) again no clip due to actor age

From Im.bd site : "Tyler Rake (Chris Elsworth) a fearless black market mercenary, embarks on the most deadly extraction of his career when he's enlisted to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord." So far so good, and unlike the movies I have picked in the last few days there's no creepy psycho shit; no self indulgent artistic wank ---- it does what you would expect, stylish extreme violence and cliched dialogue - in other words 2hrs of escapist bish bash bosh shooty, slappy, punchy, hitty, stabby, killy stuff set against the backdrop of Dakar, Bangladesh. A perfect accompaniment for a Sth African Chenin Blanc.

Swallowed - see #12,102 above for trailer

So a last night out for Benjamin (Cooper Koch) before moving to LA takes a very drastic turn in this horror/thriller.
I was wrong with my thoughts before about Red State meets Deliverance although there is an element of menacing backwoodsman, well portrayed by Mark Patton. It is an interesting plot but what starts off as a tense creepy horror thriller looses it's way in last third. Cooper Koch has a nice body though, and we do get to see all of it.

Missed this when it first came out but it is currently on a free streaming service here in UK so I gave it a go. I hadn't seen the trailer beforehand so had no idea about the plot (such as it is) or the nasty creatures they would encounter... silly plot, but lots of fun.

So I was pointed towards this movie as one of the stars is Cooper Koch (who I recently saw ALL of in Swallowed) Kevin Bacon also stars. Several young people arrive at Camp Whistler, an LBGT conversion therapy camp, but there's an axe murderer stalking the place......

Sadly this doesn't know what it wants to be - A slasher movie? Or psychological thriller about conversion therapy? It tries doing both and falls (fails) between the two. Spoiler alert there is one truely horrific moment when they break into an accappella version of a Pink song - it made my blood run cold.

PS - did yoy spot the pun in the title They/Them ? Read it out loud ..............They slash Them - gedit? Ha Ha Ha !

So yesterday aftermoon it was a King Kong "monster movie" then later a Kevin Bacon film so this afternoon I combined the two and went for a "monster movie" with Kevin Bacon. This '90s creature-feature is a load of fun with it's pure popcorn B-movie values; goofy plot and juvenile jokes but with enough jump scares to keep you entertained.

Evolution (2015) - no trailer, but put title and year in Ytube if you want to see one.

Tricky one to explain as writer/director Lucile Hadžihalilović has written very little dialogue for the strange 80min that this lasts for, it would probaly all fit on a sheet of A4 paper, but there are lots of beautiful underwater shots and waves crashing against the rocks and starfish.

Set on a rugged volcanic coastline where the small population are either young "women" aged around 18 -20 or young boys, aged maybe 10. The females look after the boys and feed them a strange stew of what might be seaweed & worms and give them a daily dose of "medicine". Later they are taken to the medical area where they inject them and then later they perform cesarian sections on the boys and remove the babies, so all making sense so far????.... No? well it would have if I had told you that the females are a kind of asexual starfish/human hybrid (we realise this towards the end when we see the suckers on their backs). So there are elements of David Lynch such as his movie Eraserhead and David Cronenberg's body horror.... creepy yet mezmerising.

Ali & Ava (2021)

Ali and Ava, both lonely for different reasons, meet and over a month a deep connection begins to grow, despite the legacy of Ava's past relationship, and Ali's emotional turmoil at the breakdown of his marriage. So it's a tender unassuming tale of two gentle unassuming people who met by chance and find attraction. The documentary-style hand held camera filming gives it a realism and the two leads, Adeel Akhtar & Claire Rushbrook are great. The trailers all have loads of kids in so here's a clip with just the two

It's been a night of bad choices:

Well it had to happen I guess - a Tom Hanks movie I switched off (I never even turned on the Da Vinci Code bollocks) I managed about 35 mins and gave in. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood? but I couldn't get into this at all.

I loved the first one but this one I lasted for 6 mins before hitting the off button, and having now seen the trailer I know I made the right decision.

The one positive is tomorrows movies cannot be this bad...... can they?
