The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent

Yes - that IS what it's called!! Nicolas Cage stars as... Nick Cage in the action-comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Creatively unfulfilled and facing financial ruin, the fictionalized version of Cage must accept a $1 million offer to attend the birthday of a dangerous superfan (Pedro Pascal). Things take a wildly unexpected turn when Cage is recruited by a CIA operative (Tiffany Haddish) and forced to live up to his own legend, channeling his most iconic and beloved on-screen characters in order to save himself and his loved ones. With a career built for this very moment, the seminal award-winning actor must take on the role of a lifetime: Nick Cage. (this from the RottenToms site)

The critics maily loved it, as did a lot of audience reviews, I couldn't get into it and switched off about 35/40 mins in.

The Meg

No trailer due to actor age, and the fact that this crap doesn't deserve one. I mean I knew what to expect a Jason Statham movie with a prehistoric Megaladon ( ie friggin' big shark)... utter rubbish. But it's a cold grey-skied Saturday afternoon and counting the number of terrible plot points and awful moments of dialogue (ans: almost all of it) kept me sort of entertained, but I did watch most of the 2nd half via the f/forward.

UN ANO, UNA NOCHE (One year, one night)
¨One year, one night" by Isaki Lacuesta is a family drama which addresses the traumas caused by surviving a terrorist attack, in this case the attacks of November 2015 in the Bataclan theater from Paris. The film deals very well with how Céline and Ramón want to forget what happened, but those memories prevent them from leading a normal life, and problems begin to arise in a couple who until then lived happily. A film that is based on the novel "peace, love and death metal", written by Ramón González, and that is more accessible than other works by the Spanish filmmaker, but that has the director's own stamp when it comes to telling history In our country the film had its presentation in the last edition of the San Sebastián festival, forming part of the pearls section. (IMdB)

The true story of Ramon Gonzalez and his girlfriend during and after the traumatic occurrences in the Bataclan. This film leaves an impression of what the visitors of the Bataclan suffered - but only a small impression because each one, who has not witnessed such an horror, realy can have a correct feeling about the horror what happened there. After the end of this film you will be very quiet and perhaps you will have another vision of your own life! --- A film worth watching!

Thank You For Your Service (2017)

So it's confession time (of sorts) I came across this as one of the stars is Joe "cutie" Cole... well any film that has Joe in it, particularly with either a prison or, as in this case, a military buzz-cut is fine by me. Anyway this turns out to be a very powerful drama about the kinds of problems with PTSD that returning combattents suffer with. The main leads - Miles Teller; Beulah Koale; Haley Bennet and Scott Hayes are all very good and although I thought the director let it drift for a little time just after half way through it is well worth a watch.. based on true events apparently.

CALL JANE - a film from 2022 with Sigourney Weaver and Elizabeth Banks.

Set in the late 1960s a pregnant housewife finds out she had a potentially life threatening illness whilst pregnant and the only treatment is to have an abortion. Declined by the hospital board of directors, she sets out to find an alternative to hospital treatment. Upon finding a group who offer services to facilitate illegal abortions she then gets more involved in the service, 'Call Jane'. (IMdB)

A powerful film. A strong and revealing glimpse into the world of the 60th in which abortion was a crime and happened only in shabby back-rooms. Not a film for pure entertainment but a truthful glimpse back to the so called "good old days"!

Wanna see something SCAREY?????

One hell of a classic horror monster movie. Written and directed by horror-master Clive Barker, deeply disturbing and not one for the faint hearted.

It's a crappy, cold, rainy and light snowing Sunday afternoon. So - another movie:

CATCH THE FAIR ONE from 2021 with actors I never before have heard from.
This film is definitely a step above other familiar themed low budget films. What a pleasant surprise! Love watching acting that feels like you're watching ordinary people living their struggle. This one definitely succeeds at that.

Don't overthink and it will pull you in til the end. Definitely worth a one time watch. (IMdB)

But the end --- the end? If you will watch it, please let me know: was the end good or bad?

LAW ABIDING CITIZEN (2009) -

If you do decide to give this one a watch DO NOT watch any trailer as they are all full of too many spoilers, here's a scene from very early on.

So Gerard Butler plays Clyde, a family man. Two violent thugs decide to barge in his house to steal, killing his wife and child in front of him (not a spoiler as this happens within the first 3 mins of the movie) then we see the scene in the clip above. At this point we the audience are thinking " well we know where this is going"... but I don't think anyone would guess exactly how this actually progresses. At 30mins in and I'm thinking "Hang on, what the hell happens for the next 90 mins". Also starring alongside Gerard is Jamie Foxx; Colm Meaney; Leslie Bibb; Bruce McGill & Viola Davis

PACIFIC RIM (2013)

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if Transformer-like giant robots controlled by humans were to fight godzilla-like creatures? Well you don't have to wonder as Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth; Pinocchio; Hellboy; Cronos etc) has already put it on the big screen for you.

When monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes...... Idris Elba; Charlie Hunnam; Burn Gorman; Ron Pearlman star in this 2hr+ escapism romp.

A MAN CALLED OTTO (2022)

No YT clip as they either have two young kids in them or too many spoilers and in any case they don't "sell" it very well.

Otto Anderson (Tom Hanks), a grumpy widower whose only joy comes from criticizing and judging his exasperated neighbours. When a lively young family moves in next door, he meets his match in quick-witted and very pregnant Marisol, leading to an unexpected friendship that will turn his world upside-down....

I loved it. Many I'm sure will find it boring and may hit the off button early as it starts off a little slow but I think I was just in the right mood for it and I thought it was great. It's a charming tale of love; regret; loneliness; friendship and community. It's at times schmaltzy, sentimental and tugs at your heartstrings but at other times it's laugh out loud funny. The main cast produce great performances, particularly Tom Hanks and Mariana Trevino as Otto's new neighbour Marisol. Nice soundtrack - particularly the use of a Kate Bush track.

My thanks to Shelter who reviewed it a few days back and gave it the (y) without which I might have never watched it as on the trailers it dosen't look that interesting

HELLBOY (2004)

The first (and I think the best) of the Ron Pearlman Hellboy series (which I think are the best Hellboy movies) - but this just might be because it was written and directed by Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth; Pinocchio; Pacific Rim; Cronos etc)

The film bowls along with lots of action and some snappy one-liners in the dialogue. Pearlman is "big red" the kitten loving demon; John Hurt is his handler/father figure. It also stars Doug Jones; Selma Blair and Jeffrey Tambor

DATING AMBER (2020)

A melacholic bittersweet coming of age/coming out comedy drama about 2 friends, Eddie and Amber - both gay, who decide to have a pretend relationhip to try and avoid questions about their sexuality. The cast includes Sharon Hogan and Art Campion and the 2 main leads are Lola Petticrew and Fionn O'Shea (who you may have seen in the excellent Handsome Devil and Normal People) they are really good on screen together, particularly the way they portray the sheer awkwardness of the situation. Worth a watch

FISHERMAN'S FRIENDS - a wonderful dramedy from 2019 (England) which is based on true events.

A fast living, cynical London music executive (Daniel Mays) heads to a remote Cornish village on a stag weekend where he's pranked by his boss (Noel Clarke) into trying to sign a group of shanty singing fishermen (led by James Purefoy). He becomes the ultimate "fish out of water" as he struggles to gain the respect or enthusiasm of the unlikely boy band and their families (including Tuppence Middleton) who value friendship and community over fame and fortune. As he's drawn deeper into the traditional way of life he's forced to reevaluate his own integrity and ultimately question what success really means. (IMdB)

This is a wonderful feel good movie if perhaps you have enough from action, crime etc. Here you can laugh and you can cry and anything in between. It is not a MUST but believe me it is a SHOULD BE!!! You will not be disappointed!

Well strangely I also chose a music themed feelgood movie, BRASSED OFF, about a struggling miners band from a struggling mining village. The owners are looking to close the mine which would signal the end of the colliery band. Great performances, especially the late Pete Postlethwaite. Also stars Ewan MacGregor; Tara Fitzgerald; Jim Carter; Stephen Tomkinson & Sue Johnson. Laugh out loud funny but also emotional and hearrtwarming. Well worth a watch

Sounds similar to the FISHERMAN'S FRIENDS film and from this reason very interesting for me as well.

Jeff Goldblum gradually turns into a human/fly hybrid in this horror pic from David Cronenberg.

You see, THIS is why Jeff was so concerned about rearing dinosaurs from pre-historic DNA..... He KNEW what could happen when laboratory experiments go wrong, but Attenborough (not David, but his brother Richard) wouldn't listen ;)
