BRASSED OFF (1996)

Thank you Slimjim for your good review some hours before. This film was since a long time in my collection - but unseen. But after your review and our FISHERMEN'S watching I searched for this movie and it was a great movie-evening again. It started a little bit slow but very soon it hit one's stride. A very moving story about a dark time of the Yorkshire coal-miners and I think about the British economy as a whole during the 1980th.

So once more Slimjim: thanks for remind this movie to me.

Director Ang Lee's stunning cinematic take on the novel by Yann Martel. The story of Pi Patel's incredible epic journey of discovery from living in a zoo to a perilous trip by sea. I have picked this clip that shows how good it looks without showing spoilers for the really sumptuous scenes. It was rightly highly praised for it's technical brilliance but it's more than just an awesome visual feast, it has great performances and a intriguing plot.

Well worth watching!

I'm not generally a big fan of the "found footage" type of movie but I think this one was designed to entertain; have a few jump-scares and be funny... I mean some of the trolls look like enormous muppets :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: A good way to spend 100mins+ on a cold snowy afternoon

CHANG CAN DUNK - a Disney Film from 2023 (not animation!)

16-year-old Asian-American, Chang, is an unpopular high schooler who loves basketball, but is always underestimated. Though his peers treat him as though he is insignificant, he becomes obsessed with learning how to slam dunk hoops with the ball. In doing so, Chang is determined to best the high school's all-star named Matt, all while hopefully winning the adoration of his romantic interest, Kristy. (IMdB)

It was for us a wonderful evening. A great little Film about a boy who wanted to be seen! Simply great! Give it a try and you'll go to bed with a smile onto your face.

PRIDE (2014)

A clip from very early on in the movie as too many spoilers in the trailer.

Well if it's an uplifting emotional feel-good film you want then how about this one! Based on a true story the film depicts a group of lesbian and gay activists (so what could be more appropriate for this forum?) who raised money to help families affected by the British miners' strike in 1984. With a witty script a cracking soundtrack and a great cast it will put a smile on your face, tears in your eye and make your heart leap. It has echoes to Brassed Off in some respects - struggling communities figting back against adversity. Great performances from all - Ben Schnetzer; Bill Nighy; George MacKay; Imelda Staunton; Dominic West; Paddy Considine; Liz White; Freddie Fox & Andrew Scott.

PANS LABYRINTH (2006) - (No clip due to actor age)

Written & directed by Guillermo del Toro this dark fantasy-horror, a "fairie-tale for adults" takes us to Spain in 1944 where young Ofelia moves with her mother to her stepfather's house. At night, a fairie leads her to a faun who informs her that she is a princess and she needs to participate in three tasks to prove her royalty...... It's dramatic, heartbreaking, beautiful, and uplifting as it weaves the fairy fantasy world with the grim real-world evils of war. The score is wonderful as is the cinematography

So a del Toro double bill seemed like a good plan but unfortunately I couldn't take more than about 35 mins of this... I loved most of del Toros movies - his earlier works like CRONOS and DEVIL's BACKBONE are innovative and gripping, Jeez if you want a full on creeepy suspense filled, edge of your seat ghost story then look no further than DEVIL'S BACKBONE. Then we get to the awesome PAN'S LABYRINTH (his masterpiece?) then we get the HELLBOY & PACIFIC RIM franchises to bring the cash in and then SHAPE OF WATER - sadly I hated this too... I was looking forward to this, a del Toro animation, but was very dissappointed,

Hoping I could balance things out regarding a del Toro evening I hit the play buttton on this, PERFECT DAY.

"A group of aid workers work to resolve a crisis in an armed conflict zone." The movie stars Tim Robbins and Benicio del Toro... (see what I did there - Guillermo del Toro to Benicio del Toro?) well if only this movie had been worth it, sadly it was crap, utterly boring, I didn't care about the characters at all and hit the OFF button again at about 30 mins

ATTACK THE BLOCK (2011) - (No clip due to actor age)

A gang of teenagers in South London defend their tower block from an invasion of aliens descided by the boys as "dogs with glow in the dark jaws" and "big gorilla/wolf motherfuckers" or more simply "Dem's aliens bruv!"

An excellent comedy/adventure/action movie and a perfect way to spend 90mins on a grey cold afternoon! The script is great and the cast are excellent. For many of them it was their first film although of course we know Jodie Whittaker (Dr Who & Broadchurch); Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz & Shaun of the Dead) and John Boyega went on to star as Finn in the later Star Wars as well as in Detroit and Pacific Rim Uprising.

Lots of tension, laughs & jump-scares - Highly recommended.

So John Boyega is fighting monsters again, but this time it's not big gorilla/wolf motherfuckers from another planet it's more big lizard style Kaiju from within our own planet in Guillermo del Toros follow-up to his earlier massive robots/hitty/smashy/skyscaper destroying punch-up movie. 2hrs of escapist fun.

ARGO (2012)

A gripping politcal thriller/action drama based on true events. Acting under the cover of a Hollywood producer scouting a location for a science fiction film, a CIA agent launches a dangerous operation to rescue six Americans in Tehran during the U.S. hostage crisis in Iran in 1979.

Ben Affleck; Bryan Cranston; John Goodman; Kyle Chandler & Alan Arkin star.

BULL - a 2021 Thriller from England!

So far so good or bad. The story is going straight foreward but then..... Grrr! The whole story is killed by a dumb thing.
Attention SPOILER!!!
Our hero get dashed with fuel - is burning like a torch and get a fatal shot. Then he is buried. 10 years later our hero is
back again without a fire scar and without a shot wound and is going on his revenge path - but perhaps he was Jesus??? Oh my God what a bullshit!

It looks like I enjoyed it more than you but I understand what you are saying about Bull's recovery from his injuries. Although it is not explained in the movie several critics here in UK have said that they think that as one of the first things he says is "I came from Hell" and as the movie starts and ends at the burial site in the field that this means Bull has been allowed to return from hell to take his bloody and violent revenge.

But I agree with you it is not clear and the film jumping from present day to past times & back to present day and so on doesn't help.

A teaser trailer as the full ones give too much away.

Small-town diner cook Odd Thomas (Anton Yechin) is an ordinary guy with a paranormal secret: he sees dead people, everywhere. When a creepy stranger shows-up with an entourage of ghostly bodachs - predators who feed on pain and portend mass destruction - Odd knows that his town is in serious trouble. Teaming up with his sweetheart Stormy (Addison Timlin) and the local sheriff (Willem Dafoe) Odd plunges into an epic battle of good vs evil to try to stop a disaster of apocalyptic proportions. Based on the best-selling thriller by Dean Koontz.

Due to some legal issues this was never given a cinema release and not promoted as it might have been, which is a shame as not many will have seen this entertainng lighthearted supernatural thriller.

As this has popped up on ALL4 here in UK, but only for the next 3 days I thought I'd give it another watch. The first time I thought it was okay, just okay - but this time it struck me moreso how much it veers from intense action (very intense of course during that scene) to long sections of ...... boredom is the word I'm looking for. Beautiful cinematography, but 2hrs 25mins of snow is too much.
