PALM TREES IN THE SNOW - a Spanish film from 2015

Killian is a young man who has never left the remote mountains of Huesca (Spain) which saw him grow up. In 1953, he travels back to the exotic Equatorial African island of Fernando Poo in Spanish Guinee, where he was born, to work in a cacao plantation alongside his father and his brother. During 20 years on this island, until the troubled days of independence, he will undertake a journey towards maturity and knowledge, but will also have to deal with pain and loss. (IMdB)

An amazing, an emotional, a compelling film about a forbidden love during the Spanish colonial rule about Guinea until the country declared the independence from Spain. A film which will continue to have an effect on you. I think a film you will remember a long time after you have seen it. Very recommended!

LUTHER - THE FALLEN SUN - a Thriller from 2023 from England.

On IMdB this film has been pulled to pieces. Until yet I have not seen the series - I will do it in the next days. Yes this film has been a little bit over the top - but nonetheless I think it was worth for an exciting movie evening. And at the end with a horny porn movie as the cream of the crop! ;)

As you say it has been heavily panned by the critics and audiences. It sounds like a classic case of a TV series being given a big movie budget but not spending it well (I haven't seen it so can't comment)
..............

DEATH OF STALIN (2018)

Armando Iannucii's viciously funny satire set in Moscow 1953. Joeseph Stalin has died and the possible contenders to take over begin scheming and plotting. A sharp, witty and very funny script performed by a stella cast including Steve Buscemi; Simon Russel Beale; Michael Palin; Jason Issacs; Paddy Considine &Jeffrey Tambor.

Highly recommended

UNDERWORLD (2003)

Ahh the age old battle for supremacy between Vampires, led by Bill Nighy - yes Bill Nighy! and Lycanthropes a.k.a. Werewolves, led by Michael Sheen. This dark gothic brooding adventure is a pretty good way to spend 2 escapist hrs. ( For the section of the audience that are so inclined there is Kate Beckinsale in tight black leather)

And again a thriller from South Korea from 2021 - EMERGENCY DECLARATION

Flight No. KI501 departs Incheon Airport with its destination set for Hawaii. Veteran police detective In-ho comes across a video message threatening a terrorist attack on this plane and eventually finds out his wife is on board too. He urgently tries to come up with a solution from the ground. One of the passengers includes Jae-hyuk, who is scared of flying and was earlier intimidated by a suspicious-looking man at the airport, finds out that he had boarded the same plane. As he becomes worried, he tries to maintain his emotions towards his daughter. The flight progresses, and a passenger with severe symptoms dies unexpectedly. With the flight crew struggling to resolve the situation, the passengers become frightened as they realize a disaster awaits them. The copilot finds himself making an 'emergency declaration'. (IMdB)

High tension! You'll bite your nails! Sometimes you'll cry! You'll sit on the edge of your chair! More than highly recommended to all who like real, real gripping thrillers!

EYE IN THE SKY (2015)

Looks like we both went for something intense! I'd forgoten how gripping this movie is! London-based military intelligence is remotely commanding a top secret drone operation to capture a group of dangerous terrorists from their safe-house in Nairobi, Kenya. The mission suddenly escalates from a “capture” to a “kill” operation as they realize that the terrorists are about to embark on a deadly suicide mission. From his base in Nevada, an american drone pilot is poised to destroy the safe-house when civilians enter the kill zone just outside the walls of the house. With unforeseen collateral damage now entering the equation, the impossible decision of when to strike gets passed up the “kill chain” of politicians and lawyers as the seconds tick down.

Both the excellent writer & director keep the tension up throughout this compelling thriller - stars Helen Mirren; Alan Rickman; Aaron Paul and Barkhad Abdi.

Oh yes, I think from time to time we'll have the same taste. And this film I've seen as well a long time ago and really I can it recommend, as I've said, to everyone who likes good and gripping thrillers! 👍

BILLIONAIRE BOYS CLUB (2018)

They were young, handsome and cunning. Based on the incredible true story of a group of wealthy boys from LA in the 80's, who established a get-rich-quick scam that turns deadly.

It's not a great movie and could have had better script and editing BUT it has Taron and Ansel on screen for about 95% of the time so there is something to look at. (I wonder...... how many actors could be easily identified JUST by their first names?)

It may not be a GREAT movie - but I think it was a good movie! Sure not an Oscar-aspirant but nonetheless worth watching.

TILL - an US-film from 2022

Till is a profoundly emotional and cinematic film about the true story of Mamie Till Mobley's relentless pursuit of justice for her 14 year old son, Emmett Till, who, in 1955, was lynched while visiting his cousins in Mississippi. In Mamie's poignant journey of grief turned to action, we see the universal power of a mother's ability to change the world. (IMdB)

This was for us a deeply disturbing movie, a true story which happened in 1955 in Mississippi. And until today (!!!!!) no court has
convicted the killer. the 2 Killer have died in the meantime but the woman who started this crime still lives today and her crime and her lies have been known from the beginning, but never ever a court was found to judge her for her crime. When the film comes to its end - you are only speechless and bewildered! This is no film for a relaxed evening - but a major point for discussion!

PROJECT WOLF HUNTING (2011)

WARNING - The level of violence and gore in this 2 hr korean action/horror is well up the scale.

The plot is about dangerous criminals on a cargo ship who are being extradited & transported from the Philippines back to South Korea. They engineer a break-out and escape after very vicious fighting/stabbing/shooting/axing etc. But it turns out they were not the only passengers - deep down in the bowels of the ship is a small lab with a few technicians watching over a genetically improved zombie-like superhuman soldier..... so a totally bonkers plot but entertaining in it's own way. It's an intense adrenaline blood and gore fest (apparently they got through 2.5 tons of fake blood - I can believe it!!!)

WITHOUT REMORSE (2021)

So after this afternoons gore fest it was time to calm it down with a more traditional movie, an adaptation of a Tom Clancy novel.

When a squad of Russian soldiers kills his family in retaliation for his role in a top-secret op, Sr. Chief John Kelly pursues the assassins at all costs. Joining forces with a fellow SEAL and a shadowy CIA agent Kelly’s mission unwittingly exposes a covert plot that threatens to engulf the U.S. and Russia in an all-out war. Torn between personal honor and loyalty to his country, Kelly must fight his enemies without remorse if he hopes to avert disaster and reveal the powerful figures behind the conspiracy.... so in other word just like every Tom Clancy novel but whereas this could have easily starred Liam(I will find you and I will kill you)Neeson; Gerard Butler or Jamie Foxx as Kelly this time it was Michael B. Jordan ably supported by the always good Jamie Bell; Jodie Turner-Smith and Guy Pearce.

It was okay - the plot got a little confusing towards the end, but that might have been the bottle of italian Saove,

This evening it was a movie from France and from the United Arab Emirates from 2021 - THE AMBUSH

It is the winter of 2018, the men and women of the UAE military are deployed to provide aid. At the Mocha Base, spirits are high as three Emirati soldiers anticipate an imminent return home. While on their final routine patrol, the three soldiers, Ali, Bilal and Hindasi are ambushed by heavily armed militants on their route, through a narrow canyon. Trapped, wounded, and out of communication range, the three soldiers realize the gravity of their situation. They are running out of options, munitions - and time. Back at the base, their commander receives word and realizes that the assault on the UAE army patrol was premeditated. A rescue mission is quickly put into action, but will air and land support reach the men in time, and will they survive? Based on true events, AL KAMEEN (The Ambush) is a tension filled race to pull off a dangerous mission in an unforgiving landscape. —AGC Studios

A very gripping and sometimes hard to take film about a patrol which get into an ambush. As well no light food - but too based on true events, which makes this film still crueler. Pray to the Lord or whatever that we will not have to go through such a hell!

Yes the Soave was delicious ..... and Yes, this is because I arranged to have hidden CCTV cameras installed at your home ;) ;)🤣🤣🤣

LIVING 2022

To say this was a slow-burner would be an understatement. I think at around 30 mins in I might have switched off - but the fact that it was a Bill Nighy film (I'm a big fan) kept me going and I was glad I did. The story, such that it is, tells of Mr Williams. a senior civil servant in town planning whose life takes a heartbreaking turn when a medical diagnosis means he has 6 to 8 months to live. Influenced by a local decadent playwright and a vibrant woman, he continues to search for meaning until a simple revelation gives him a purpose to create a legacy for the next generation. It is poignant, subdued, melancholic and moving. The cast put in fine performances but the film belongs to Bill Nighy. He gives a masterclass in understatement, every unspoken word, twitch, glance or heavy sigh - a superb portrayal.

I haven't heard from this film until yet - but as you referred to Bill Nighy I will watch out for this film as well. And at once I will search our House for your cameras! :D

Today LE ROI DES OMBRES (The Shadow King or In his shadow) France 2023 (Netflix)

After the death of their father, two half-brothers find themselves on opposite sides of an escalating conflict with tragic consequences. (IMdB)

"Overall in his shadow is not a great movie but the plot is watchable and the acting is not bad." has a critic written. Well, as I have said before: not every movie can be an OSCAR-aspirant. But in my opinion this film has suspense, empathy and is with 89 minutes long and short enough for a good cinema adventure. I would recommend it to you.

CYPHER (2002)

A mind-bending; suspense; sci-fi; spy movie..... "Morgan Sullivan/Jack Thursby is an accountant anxious for a more exciting life. He gets his chance when Digicorp hires him as a corporate spy. While carrying out his first missions, however, Sullivan keeps crossing paths with an enigmatic woman named Rita, who claims Digicorp is brainwashing him. Soon Morgan is questioning everything about his life, including his own identity, making things increasingly complicated when he becomes a double agent for Digicorp's rival, Sunways."

One of those involving plots that have you wondering WTF is going on? It sure is an easier watch the second time around. Jeremy Northam & Lucy Lui are the 2 main leads in this engaging movie. Recommended.
