why do american men shave their body hair?

Wow. Amazing not many guys here like body hair =(

I really like leg hair, and chest hair (once properly maintained) and facial hair. Long hair (on head) on guys was never my thing, but there are some guys who are an exception for me. I dont like back hair, and I dont have that thankfully. I also kinda like hair on the butt, but only on the cheeks and no where else.

Just to elaborate with what i was saying earlier. I think the reason I like it is because it makes a man seem more rough and rugged. It doesn't make a guy less than a man if he goes with a smooth body. Heck there are some guys who do look good without body or facial hair, like some male dancers. But I prefer a guy with hair (either dark or blonde). I don't think it is disgusting, or a deal-breaker, just a taste. =)

It's interesting to speculate:
- Why do humans have body hair at all;
- Why do we have so little of it, compared with say apes or other large mammals;
- Why do some men have a lot more than others, and why do women generally have little or none.

My guess is that, like other animals, humans originally had hair for warmth and as a way of protecting the skin from injury. Hair also has disadvantages; it makes it harder to keep cool in hot weather, and can harbour parasites such as fleas, and I imagine over the aeons the changes in climate and human activity made it advantageous for humans to shed most of their body hair.

As for the last question, I guess a biologist might be able to answer that.

I think all of your ideas are good theories. I'll also add that anyone who has shaved their ass hair can give you two more:
  • Hair wicks moisture away from the skin, so you don't feel wet and clammy in warm weather.
  • It prevents chafing when skin rubs against skin.

(Talcum powder or baby powder can help with this, guys.)

;)

Women have more hair that you might think. It's just that they've been removing it longer ;)

Well i was made with little body hair, so i don't trim or any of that stuff. But at the same time i think its best when one is not overtly covered with hair---actually medium to none is my preference. Most guys I know ( all str8) don't shave anything (except their face)....so i can't say i speak for the Americans that do.

Though i would add the new generation of men focus a bit more on their body that some people in the past....thus are more likey to trim wildly grown armpits.

Well I was always taught that body hair serves the same purpose as your eyelashes and eyebrows - as protection against dirt particles, sweat and germs, and just when compared to the human foreskin (which of course serves more purpose) hair needs to be maintained and groomed properly.

I cannot imagine body hair really being there for the purpose of warmth, as if that is the case, children would've been born with body hair as they are the most vulnerable to colder climates.

In my opinion the male body just as nature intended is just an amazing thing to look at, be it thin or fat, muscular or lanky, and almost every part of the body serves a purpose including body hair.

One thing that determines higher body hair levels, if my memory serves me well, is higher testosterone levels, so women who have higher testosterone levels would have higher body hair growth, which is why you find guys (like me) who make remarks like body hair looks more manly. But higher body hair levels vary depending upon genetic and ethnic backgrounds.

I think most American guys do it 'cause their girlfriends like it. I once watched my 23 year old nephew get a shave by his ditzy girlfriend. He was in a pair of tight briefs and she did a full shave job. He is fairly hairy and has a good bod. I thought it was weird to do it with me watching though. At one point she had him on his back with his legs bent over his head, kinda like buttfck position. Erotic.

My nephews atitude is he wants to get fucked and he'll do what it takes to get these girls hot.

Not sure I agree with the words "most" or "American". America (presuming you mean North America) includes Canada, the USA and Mexico. Last time I checked, lots of Mex dudes are hairy and Latino men don't all shave their bodies. Same for the rest of N. American males. Judging by the men I see all around me in daily life (as opposed to models on the internet), most men do not remove their body hair. I see hairy arms, legs, chests; and in the gym I observe hairy butts and lots of pube hair.;)

I like the look and feel of a body that's smooth. However, I would never shave myself and don't understand how others can enjoy doing so. I shaved myself once several years ago and for well over a month, it felt like my clothing was stuffed with needles, cold weather was more cold and I constantly itched everywhere. On top of that, I'd prefer hair over stubble.

My solution to body hair is to just court people who enjoy it.

I like men with hair

Regardless of the popular view, I like men with their natural hair. After all, that is one of the characteristics of a man and I like men.
As a personal preference, I am particularly turned on by straight body hair rather than kinky hair; the texture of the straight hair is very sensual when you run your fingers through it.
I am opposed to any trimming, let alone shaving.
Just the sight of a hairy butt will get me hard.
Hair on the balls is sexy and retains that male essence (smell).
Maybe times will change and hair will come back into style.

Most straight guys would wear a pink tutu if they thought it would get them laid.

nowt wrong with a smooth bod, not a fan of overly hairy anything, but I'm not sure about the no pubes downstairs thing, best to keep it trim but not gone altogether, but yeah, each to their own it's all good :)

I always thought men shaved their body hair because it was supposed to show off their physiques. Isn't that why bodybuilders do it? That, and tanning; it shows greater definition? I suppose it could be for multiple reasons but I understood that as being one of the major factors -- that's why my friend shaves his chest and arms.

I frankly like it either way. Body hair is hardly a determinant of attraction.

Question for those who do shave: don't you itch afterward? :? I have moderate body hair and have always wanted to see what a trim would look like, but I'm scared I would walk around constantly scratching my netherlands. Looking like I have critters.

The preceding few posts in this thread smack of prejudice - something that as gay men I would have thought we can do without, having had enough of being on the receiving end of it.
Oh hon, this is tame to some of the other things I've seen and read. Gay men want equality so terribly, but we are primarily the ones feeding the stigma that surrounds us. The lot of us are hypocrites. We have some changing to do before we expect the world to change for us.

[/Political rant].

You could try waxing. It's not permanent, but it rips the hair out by the root and takes much longer to grow back than shaving...

That's the main reason I started shaving. Not that I am a bodybuilder - well technically I am, since I weight train seriously and regularly, but I have never competed nor wanted to compete. The fact is, one of the motivations for getting muscular is to show off, and having lots of hair does make for poorer definition.

Shaving your chest or other parts of your body may not be as bad as you think. It depends of course on how much hair you have...

Hair on your chest is not basically different from the hair on your face. If you have a reasonably hairy chest and you decide to shave it all off at once, you will find it tedious and you will probably go through more than one razor - and if you are impatient you are likely to get careless and give yourself a few cuts. Think of shaving a beard right off, then multiply that by how much bigger your chest is than your chin.

On the other hand, if you start off by just using light strokes with the razor, restricting yourself to a few minutes, not trying to take it all off and not worrying about a really close shave, you can take some of it off and leave less for next time, and the time after that. This also lets you get used to the feeling of having less hair.

If you want to stay smooth-chested, it IS a commitment - you need to shave at least every few days. Still, most people think nothing of shaving (their face) daily, so it's just another habit that you may or may not choose to take up.
