I've been going to pride parades since 1980 in NYC, Chicago, San Francisco, Dallas, Fort Worth, and even Berlin. I think we all get too much into our individual selves too much sometimes, and we forget how important it is to have a community. Pride parades are one of the few events that bring us together as a community, but they only represent the community as well as the people who choose to participate. We might not like everything we see, but it's all part of our community (kind of like the idea that we might not like everyone in our own family, but they're still our family). I don't worry about the image pride parades present to the media. They're not for the media--they're for us to celebrate our history and who we are. And they ought to be fun. What bothers me about the NYC parade is all the corporate floats. The crowd is still fun, but the parade is getting dull.
